Hello,

The university I work for in Busan, Dong-Seo University, has decided that my degree from The University of Southern Queensland, in Australia, is not a recognized degree. The degree is an 8 course Master in TESOL with no thesis. I am not sure, but Dong-Seo University, probably not the recognizing standard in the field of education for stating what a degree is, shouldn't be telling people that they'll hire you based on your Master degree, and then turn around and tell you that your degree is not valid.

My beef with Dong-Seo now is that they are not paying me the extra 200,000won that was promised to me for having the Master in TESOL.

What degrees (and from what universities) have been recognized or not recognized by your schools and universities in Busan or elsewhere in Korea?

Mike

What makes an hour in an Australian school? When I hear an 8 hour degree I think of something that took you one semester to get. I know things are different in other countries, so maybe explain how long it took.

Also, get your email off your post, if someone needs to get in contact they can PM you.

When I see this, I think that he can't read english. (unless the first post was edited). The guy said an eight course degree, and typically it was supposed to be approx 2 years or at the least the one I looked at was.

I think for the University, they may be confused about the degree and things that confuse koreans seem to be ignored by them at times. Or they just don't want to pay the money and thats the excuse.

I'll claim that he edited it (but it was probably my lacking skills). Doesn't matter since he decided to make another nearly exact post on this same forum.

I looked at Deakin University since that's where I'm doing my online study and they have a masters in TESOL program and the website states

Quote:
To be awarded a Master of Education (TESOL), students are required to successfully complete 8 credit points of study under one of the following configurations:

So, I suppose it is possible. Deakin is a good school from what I've gathered...certainly not a degree-mill or anything like that...

what does your contract say? Or are you negotiating with them?
Seems like there HAS to be some kinda recourse...

Well, you already made a post about this.
But, anyway, an 8 course masters does sound a little weak, especially with no thesis. The average is 10-12 courses, sometimes with a thesis. I'm surprised they actually looked into it though, that's pretty cool.

I would fight it if it was a condition of your hiring and if it is spelled out in your contract.

I would also email USQ directly and let them know that their gegrees are not being recognized by DS (including the boss's email address at DS).

You didn't do a thesis, they want a thesis. Korean MA's always have a thesis. Too bad. This is hardly "not recognizing degrees from Australia."
