There is no good/bad.
They are not working for you (they work for the school who is paying them). They are not your friend. They are NOT your babysitter. They will NOT take care of you when things go sour with your employer. They cannot act on your behalf if you have problems.
A good analogy would be a used car salesman. They show you the car (introduce you to it). You don't trust anything they tell you.
YOU check the car out and decide if you want to buy it. You buy and they get paid.
A recruiting agency is an introduction to an employer and nothing more. They get paid by the school / hakwon to find a warm body who will meet the requirements demanded by immigration for a work visa.
Send your information to every recruiter you can find along with your job preferences.
Scan the replies. Choose the ones that appeal to you and ignore the rest.
Now get a copy of their contract. If it is acceptable to you, get the names of reference foreign teachers. Do your own due dilligence and you will be fine.
Trust any recruiter and you will, 100% assured, get burned.
.

When I quit a hakwon they placed me in (due to numberous contract violations) People Recruit threatened to have me put on an "Immigration blacklist".
I would stay far away from them. |

I went through People Recruit as a newbie, and I'm not afraid to admit that I went in to the process, for the most part blindly. However, everything that they told me to expect came true and everything they promised me came to be as well.
Don't expect them or anyone to hold your hand through your experience here, it's not their job. Half of the adventure is going through the good and bad in a new culture on your own. All you can do is come to Korea with an open mind and good attitude and everything will be fine. Just make sure your contract is in order, if anything looks fishy question it. Just know that recruiters aren't out to get you, they are simply a business doing what any business does, making money. So do your own research and make sure that coming here to teach is what you want to do.
Some of the posts on these esl blogs can be very informative, but take the opinion posts with a grain of salt. You should know that 99% of what people write on these forums are from people who have had a bad experience and have some vendetta against a school, a recruiter, or Korea in general. Most all people with good experiences don't bother to post anything on these sites because they are busy enjoying their life and experiences in a new county.
People Recruit never once lied to me, they didn't paint a perfect picture. They just did their job and found a job that they thought would be good for me, guided me through the visa process and got me started, all the while answering any questions I had. That's all you can expect from any recruiter, and from what I know about other recruiters, it's more than most.
Good luck with your decision. |

I find it funny that you have ONE post on these forums and it's in defense of a bad recruiter that quite a few people on these forums had problems with.
Yes, as long as things go well and you nod your head and smile, people recruit will be fine. But if you start asking questions about your pension or medical services...expect that sunny disposition to turn nasty...fast. |

i didn't accept a job through People Recruit but did submit my resume and had numerous offers from them. they were civil, but when i pushed for certain facts, they got explicitly annoyed. pressured me to just accept an offer and said i was being ungrateful or something.
i ended up going through ATOP, a company i would recommend based on my experience...extremely patient, gave me everything i asked for, went above and beyond some ways, in fact.
good luck to you!!! above all, stand your ground, and make it clear that you're still **considering** a job before you actually decide to take it. a lot of recruiters assume it's a go once you show even a spark of interest in a certain position. make sure you ask for contact info (phone and email) from current and former teachers. |

The good thing about People Recruit is that their website (2 year old content) does tell you the bad things that you can expect from a hakwon. However, the tone and verbage of the site all but explicitly states that they will hold you hand.
It seemed kind of hard to believe, I guess that is for a reason. |
