I've worked in a hagwon for 9 months now...the boss recently offered me a 'deal'. He wants to let me go home early (two months) and will still pay my severence and my return flight back to Canada. The catch is that he wants me to leave my diploma and sign a contract for another year before I leave, stating that I will return to his school in four months. I had every intention of coming back anyways, but am not sure if I want to work at the same school.
He will not contribute to the pension fund and I'm being overcharged for my taxes. What do y'all think? Is it reasonable to think that I could take this offer and get out of the new contract upon returning to Korea? I am in a hurry to type this and may have left out some information but I think that sums up the situation. I am just looking for someone that knows contract loopholes to weigh in...thanks in advance. |

If you sign it you are fooked.
He will have your diploma as a hostage AND with the E2 extension you will have problems finding other employment - you can count on him NOT giving you a release.
Just say no, finish your contract, take your money and find a good place. Time to network there dude.... |

Wow- this sounds terrible in every sense of the word. Yes- if you sign you are screwed- promise or no promise.
No matter how much you trust your current boss, even if you wanted to return to the job, keeping your diploma is pretty shady/insane. It's as if he wouldn't trust YOU.
Furthermore- if your boss isn't paying into pension (or isn't planning to in the future if you sign? I didn't quite understand w/ how you stated it,) this is VERY ILLEGAL and you would have to report your boss to the pension office immediately. He would be breaking tax laws, and could be fined heavily. And you could be screwed over again (if you are a U.S. or Canadian citizen and are expecting to get it reimbursed.)
I'd so a big NO to this situation. |
