Unfortunatelty I'm not available between those dates. I am intuigued, however, as to why you think NZ is a good place for snowboarding - I've never heard it mentioned as good for this. I've been skiing once before, and loved it, so I would love to try again. What does NZ have to offer? |

NZ has some of the best snow in the world. plus you could can go in the summer (here) bc it's winter in the southern hemisphere there. its one of if not the only place you can ride fresh powder while overlooking a sea/ocean.
i'd DEF be down to go snowboarding in NZ...i looked into it but plane tix are quite expensive and the flight is quite long. if you could look into a deal for flight/lodging/lift tix consider me game. do you think it's possible to do a trip for like 1.5mil? |

I boarded every weekend for 2 years when I was a student down in the South Island. I'd love to go back, but get August off not July....
if you have any questions.....feel free.
and yes, it really is one of the best places in the world to board, BUT there are not as many chairlifts as in Europe etc. i.e you have to go hiking a lot to get to a lot of the powder, but that just makes it a different experience, no worse^^
we use to hike around with our board, foudn some of the most amazing powder slopes. Not a soul in site - surreal. |

i would be totally down to get a group together to throw down on a lodge. do they have those there? am i projecting my n.american experiences down under? there has to be some housing arrangements for groups, yea? thats by far the most economical way to stay/ride in my experience...plus you get to rage your face off everynight without pissing off neighbors. natalie...have you seen this??? |

sure, in Wanaka which (I believe) is the most beautiful place to stay and so close to the fields. Queenstown of course is just as beautiful, but more touristy.
We rented a batch ("cabin" whatever you call it) in Wanaka for a decent price, split the cost between 6 girls and had a blast (much cheaper than Queenstown). We also hired a van for a week, diesel - works out really cheap altho there are buses going up every morning of course, I prefer having the flexibility of your own vehicle plus storage/somewhere to leave all your gear.
so, I recommend staying in Wanaka, get on line and sort out some homestay/rent/lease for your time. I'm not sure of a website sorry, but I do know a lot of people rent out their places during the ski season. You are in easy access to Trebel Cone and not too far from Coronet Peak and the Remarkables in Queenstown - the three biggest fields in the South Island. Good luck^^ |

I can easily reserve a youth hostel that even provides transportation for us. I am sorry but I have to go 7/30-8/3(my company chooses my vacation for me) and I will take a week before or after also. But I figure after is better because its nearer the season peak.
I am down with hiking. I snowboarded 14 years of my life. I really would like to go heliboarding too. 1.5 is gonna be hard to do. I found a travel agency that will do everything for us including airfare for 12 days and lift tickets for around 3 mil. The major problem right now is that all the airfare is booked and we would still be on waiting.
WHO's down to hit the back country!

If you are used to skiing the big fields of North America/Europe the i hate to say it but you will probably be dissappointed. Our snow is very different, fields are smaller and weather more variable. We get very little powder, weather can stay bad for weeks at a time or stay clear for weeks (meaning no snow). It can also get very icy.
On the flip side it is snow. the scenery is amazing and there are some really good back country areas. I love skiing in New Zealand, it is nice fast snow that keeps you on your toes
I would recommend the North Island ski fields (Mt Ruapehu). The area is much bigger than the south island fields and where else can you ski on an active volcano (had a big laha a month ago). Downside is the weather is more variable.

Skiing in the north island is probably cheaper however the night life is not so good. The place to stay would be a town called Ohakune you can get cabins for quite cheap esp if you are in a group
Info about the south island fields

pm me if you want info, I have skiied all over New Zealand and sorry for the essay |
