Who's supposed to buy my plane ticket? I'm at a Pubic School. Me or my school? I was under the impression I was. Turns out Whitey wrangler comes and asks about where my hometown is, and when I'm going.

I plan to cash in the ticket and stay here, BUT, I'm owed the ticket, so I was going to do what I found out from here--buy a refundable ticket, and cash it in after showing the school the receipt.

There's nothing exdplicit in my contract, just the general GEPIK-type contract (though not GEPIK).

Very Happy

Once could be a typo, but to write pubic in the thread title, and in the body of the message.... well.... it made my day to tell you the truth haha.

This is perfectly acceptable with a public school.
If your wrangler gives you any grief, call Wenise Kim at the GEPIK office.

Just remember that you MUST be out of the country by the last day indicated on your ARC. You can come back the same day (on a tourist stamp) but you must leave.

Typo on PubiLic was intentional. I'm was mad at 'em. Laughing

About the ARC date. Really? But if I line up another job, they can take care of it in-country, right? That's what happened when I went from Hagwon to Public School last year. No need for Visa run.

It's a bit strange, I was then working illegally for two weeks since I know I started work last June 1st. But my ARC dates are June 15, 06 to May 31, 07. Hmmm. Gotta sort this out, but thanks, you probably saved me from Immi trouble. Cheers.

Tell your recruiter that you will handle the ticket as it is not their job. You can say you are not sure when you are going back yet or something.

Well, it's the head English teacher at the school that is "handling me" and he just gave me a piecce of paper, with a travel agents' phone #, which I am supposed to call and make a reservation for whenever I like, and the school will "pay the bill."

WTF?

Who is this Wenise Kim person at GEPIK? I tried looking this up on their website but had trouble. And what can GEPIK do for a situation like this if a school doesn't comply??? How would they help?

They've been a little pissy with me since I told them two weeks ago I wouldn't re-sign with the school...

I'm pretty pissed myself. Worked at a Hakwon and was royally f**ked in the ass over airfare and severance there, and now I'm about to be jacked by a Public School...

Let me be clear though--I am at a non-EPIK/GEPIK/SMOE school. Hired by the city for some reason, no connection to any of the programs.

That's funny they're pissed, but not surprising. Same thing's happenig to me. My boss has been acting a bit annoyed with me since I told them I would not like to renew my contract. She looked a little surprised.

Funny thing is- about 3 weeks ago, this was the same person who told me that the rest of the school thinks I'm a burden on them, and that the other teachers believe it is too much of a hassle for the school to have a native English teacher working there. She even went so far as to tell me that if they decided not to hire another English teacher- it would have been because of me.

...And they're surprised I wouldn't want to stick around. I'm counting the days until I can leave.

sometimes you can never understand the principles here. I had a friend at a school in my town, they were arses in that they would enforce every bad part of the contract they could, like making sure he had to come in during vacation and sit in an empty school (the only one in town that had to do that) they told him he couldnt call in sick, even though sick days were in his contract, told him he must work without a coteacher eventhough he wanted one, he couldnt leave for lunch when lunch was something nasty, no one would help him with anything, all the BS.

then they get upset when he refused to stay another year.

when he got a job at another school in town, he came back from his home and the principal got upset that he did not come to his old school to say hi.

what is happening in those people's heads?

I was just told that "Everyone one in Gyonggi Province does it this way" regarding airfare (school choosing to get billed for the ticket through their chosen travel agent). . He said he asked someone "high up" at the Gyonggi Ed office about the procedure, as he says he didn't know the procedure himself.

I said fine, make it an open-ended ticket, as I may not go for two weeks. They said that was impossible, as it gets invalidated after 10 days. So now I'll have to drop from consideration several positions I was considering because of date constraints.

After a year at a hagwon, and a year at a public school, I will have had a grand total of one, one-way ticket (to Korea) paid for if I take another job. Just not right.

How are those bad parts of the contract? Coming and sitting in an empty school does suck, but other people have had to do this. If my school did this, I would either not re-sign or re-sign after getting them to agree that when I don't have classes I don't have to come to school.

Telling him he couldn't call in sick? He should have shown them the contract and told them to call Wenise Kim if they have a problem.

Working without a co-teacher? Sometimes that happens. Most of my classes are without a co-teacher and frankly I VASTLY prefer it that way. Again this happens to many teachers.

As for lunch again he should have shown them the contract. Lunch hour is YOUR time.

Tell your friend when he goes back to his country for vacation to be sure not to leave his spine over there again.
