I've been in Korea long enough now but I've never been to a Jjimjilbang and I'm curious to know what's acceptable behaviour in one of these places. Are you supposed to take a shower before jumping into any of the baths? Do they provide towels/lockers? Are the sauna areas separate or shared? What's the best time to go in order to avoid having people staring at my white a.ss?

Thanks for any advice!

I agree with the above.

Shower when you first enter~ before entering a pool. After you sweat in the saunas, shower before jumping in a pool.

Arrive at Jimjjilbang. Accept white T-Shirt, shorts and towel from desk.

Remove shoes. Put shoes in shoe locker.

Proceed to changing facility. Facing the centre of the room, slowly get undressed, beginning with socks, and working upwards from there. Hang clothes in locker. Don't forget key.

Proceed to showers. Stare around a little, get feel for surroundings paying careful attention to what others are doing. If a foreigner is present, take the extra time to stare at him.

Shower sitting on small communal stool. If alone, find another single male to scrub down, he will appreciate this and should return the gesture. Grunting is recommended. Take the opportunity to clear all mucous from airways particularly the back of the throat, aim for maximum hoeking volume.

After showering, proceed to sauna. Sit down in sauna without towel, legs spread far apart, look around, grunt, stare at any foreigners present.

When sauna becomes unbearable, proceed to coldest pool, enter slowly, stand in the middle of the cold pool splashing water over your upper body.

Proceed to warm pool, avoid glance from giggling foreigner but proceed with stare when his back is turned, enter the hot pool slowly, don't forget to slowly groan upon entry. Soak. If previous shower scrub partner is present, negotiate further back rubbing, then sit with arm around buddy and stare at any foreigners present.

Once soju hangover has depleted to satisfactory levels, proceed once again to shower area, quickly shower.

Proceed back to changing room area. Before drying, take the time to potter around the changing room looking at nothing in particular unless there is a foreigner present in which case stare blatantly.

To dry off, stand in the middle of the change area facing the centre of the room, feel free to place one foot up on the centre bench, pat dry slowly.

Once towel dry, proceed to the hair drying facilities. Blow dry hair, head first, then proceeding downwards to the pubic region, using maximum blow force, dry pubic hair until light and fluffy.

Make use of any mirrors and spend 10-15 minutes slowly getting changed, check regularly for foreigners and stare as necessary.

Sleep in designated area if required.

Return towels and whites to washing basket.

Return to soju tent.

If a woman: Be polite, don't be a slob.

If a man: Do whatever the hell you feel like.

I'm korean and guys check out my equipment here too. No big deal.

What I'd like to know is why are there hardly any neighborhood bathhouses in the states or canada? Might it be because there would be the danger of too many people "checking" each other out? why this fear of being naked in front of your fellow man/guy?

Well, fitness clubs generally have a sauna and a steam room as well as large showers.

good point but I think they're different from saunas where people walk around comfortable with their bodies.

Faster did a good job of answering your questions.

I would ad: behave like a normal human being, avoid being a moron and you will do fine.

As for stares...they will happen but believe me...if you go looking for stares you are sure to find some and most likely to provoke some. Just get in there, do your thing and relax...thats what those places are for.

Usually only the women are given towels at the desk. The men get their towels inside. Otherwise excellent!
