I recently finished my year's contract. I agreed to a new contract with a nice increase and other improvements. Once I finished my contract i went away for 2 weeks for a vacation. In this time, I have changed my mind about staying. I'm happy with the school itself, just not with the location and i'm beginning to feel quite isolated and unusually for me quite lonely. I'm not prepared to feel like his for a whole year just to keep my director happy.
When i started at my school i worked for the first 5 weeks or so before going to japan to collect my visa. When resigning i didn't renew my visa at that time. So as a result my visa will expire in mid June. What i propose to do is offer to work until this time then leave.
I'm worried about my director's reaction to this news. He has found it difficult to get teachers in the past and was extremely grateful when i said i would stay. I will offer to help him find a new teacher as much as i can. He owes my about 600000 won, which i'm worried about losing, but if he keeps that to help him pay recruiter fees and to give me a
smoother exit i'd be down with that, as i feel like i've let him down a bit.
So, my visa will expire in about one month from now. If i leave the country just before it expires can i come back a couple of days/weeks later and get a new job/visa with another school without any problems?
Any advice on this situation would be greatly appreciated. |

Where are you based Moonhead? If your school and the director are great and it's just the location that sucks I wouldn't give it up so easily.

If you visa expires without having gotten an extension you can leave and come back the next day (or even the same day) and get a new visa at a new school. |

I live in one of the smaller cities. I really want to go back to Seoul or Busan. I'm fed up with being the only foreigner at the school and in my area. The signs are all there for me to have a miserable year if i stay. I broke up with my long term girlfriend recently which also doesn't help my feelings.
I'm concerned about the reaction though. Should i tell him my decision first thing tomorrow or after the teaching day or on Friday? I'm thinking asap is the best option. My director has a bad habit of turning on employees how decide to leave, guess i'm just going to have to prepare for some sort of backlash. Money isn't a problem for me as i've saved a fair amount this past year, but obviously i'd like to leave getting paid most/all that i'm owed.
I have to right to back out though, right? Like i said i signed the new contract, but the visa has yet to be renewed. Could he try and jeopardize my chance to get another job with the people at immigration, by coming up with some BS story? Maybe just paranoid. But i'll let you know how i fare tomorrow! |
