Forgive my ignorance in these matters...
If I wanted to take a short vacation to Japan, would I need to apply for a tourist visa?
Also, which countries in your experience are OK with Americans entering without any type of visa whatsoever (only passport in hand)?

You are fine for a 90 day visit to Japan.
