I've searched the forums, but can't find any info on this particular question. Apologies if it's been answered before.

My E2 expires this week, and in lieu of any half decent job offers, I'm going to leave and come back with a tourist visa. A couple of questions, and as always, I will buy you the beverage of your choice if you can answer them for me!

1) As a Canadian, I am granted six months tourist visa on entry, yes? Is this always the case? Do they try and give you 3 motnhs unless you ask, or something, or is it rubber stamp?

2) Can I just go through customs and immigration at the air/sea port Japan, go eat some lunch, then come back to Korea? Anyone done this?

3) Taking the hydrofoil to Fukuouka sounds like it might be fun (and cheap). Anyone done it? The immigration deal would be the same if I went this route, wouldn't it?

The Hydrofoil is really good. It takes about 3 hours and goes usually 2 or 3 times a day. So easy and run by the Japanese so a little bit more relaxed and efficient. here is the link

Thanks for the hydrofoil info, just because.

As far as the visa questions - can someone please help me out here? I'm a-beggin' now! Someone must have done this...

As an expert in this: You get stamped and they tend to put the date you need to leave by in the square. They always gave me 6 months. Hooray for Canaduh.

Though, if you do it too many times, they start to look at you funny and start asking too many questions.

This is pretty much what you did on your visa run.

I dunno about that. But I do know that the ladies in Kyushu are "Rrrrrrowwww!"

Did that help?

I've never gone and then come right back, but I suppose a good place to ask would be the ticket booth for the hydrofoil. I think it's possible, but I wouldn't bet my life on it. There may be some rules that immigration will try and stick on you... quien sabe?

I have done the overnight ferry, spent the day in Japan and then come back the following night. That way I didn't have to get a hotel or anything in Japan. I only had to buy food and subway fare. If you go this route, the ferry arrives in Japan at 7:00 am which gives you plenty of time to do whatever you want. It then departs back to Korea at 5:00 or 6:00 pm. (you'll have to check on that)

The down side was that the trip was spent lying on the floor in a common sleeping area with about 30 -50 other passengers. Not the best, if you want privacy, I believe you can pay extra for a private cabin. I don't know what they cost.

Anyway, I hope this helps.
cheers

Thank you, gentlemen. Any other info is of course welcome.

The one visa run I did, about 5 years ago, I stayed overnight. Just wondering if anyone's specifically done the E2-->Tourist thing, and come back on the same day. 'cause like some waygug-in said, sometimes they have the super-secret rule book in the back somewhere, that they go and find, blow the dust off of, flourish with an 'ah-hah!' and ram up your unsuspecting keyster. Forewarned is fore-armed.
