So, I found a Mr. Beer kit on Goodbeer.co.kr, and have had a fairly good experience.
I used the default can of malt extract they give you to make a pilsner. I decided to get jiggy and make a mango-cinnamon beer.
Well, I used too much of the canned mango. Right now, tasting a warm but carbonated bottle (the rest are in the fridge), the mango wasn't necessarily a *bad* choice, it's just that I used too much. Maybe just one-quarters of a can will be sufficient next time. However, I'd like to try mango again--it's summer, and I can tell that if it weren't so overpowering, it'd be pretty refreshing.
The Mr. Beer worked out well; I *do* have some reserves about the screw-top that's used for the top of the fermenting barrel though; it's really cheap, and there's been more than one time when I've overturned it with water for cleaning, and gotten a leak...showing that it's not ultra-airtight. But, for the purposes of just sitting in a corner, it's tight enough, although if you're fermenting for months you may want to think twice about using the supplied Mr. Beer jug.
the rest of the batch is sitting in the fridge, and I can't wait to try out one of the colder brews |
