Police yesterday asked the National Institute of Scientific Investigation to examine a steel rope which snapped during a fire drill at an elementary school on Thursday, taking the lives of two and severely injuring one.

Two mothers -- Jeong In-young, 42 and Hwang Seong-hye, 36 -- fell from a salvage basket lifted 24 meters off the ground and died during the drill at Wonmuk Elementary School in Muk-dong, Seoul Jungrang district. One other woman, O Hye-suk, 40, was badly injured and is said to be in critical condition.

The salvage basket had flipped over as the steel rope binding the basket to the fire truck was let loose, police said. Investigators sent the remainder of the wire after detecting several signs of decay.

Whoa. Apparently fire drills are NOT mandatory for schools. That's beyond insane. And when they do make a half assed attempt to conduct a fire drill, they decide to showboat. Evacuating people from several floors up by a ladder/basket system is risky. Training 3 mothers (who shouldn't be in the school in the first place) to get in the basket isn't really all that helpful. You might employ this exit method when someone really is at risk, but it makes no sense to risk anyone just running a fire drill.

My co-teacher told me she thinks that when this happened, the children were all outside to "see how it is done" in case of a real fire. Which means, likely their children watched them fall to their deaths. That's the worst thing about it to me. Not only were they putting on an unnecessary show, but it all went down in front of the kids.

She also said the head of that fire department has been fired.

A sad situation for all at that school. My thoughts go out to the kids.

One of the teacher's at school told me that as a result of this accident there can be NO MORE fire drills in schools for the time being. They will check all equipment and then decide if they should allow fire drills again. Now thats safe! Shocked
