I'm currently assembling all the neccessary paperwork for PS recruitment. While I waiting for my LOR's and criminal record check to arrive, I thought I'd try and garner some more info about areas in and around Seoul.
I've already done some location research, namely on Bucheon and Bupyeong, which both seem ok, and if no better locations transpire, is where I'll request to be posted.
What I'd ideally want is any info on those other areas that are about an hours ride on the subway from downtown Seoul.
I've no interest in living in Seoul.
*EDIT*: Only those locations within easy reach of the Subway network

^Thanks.
What subway line is that served by? Is it North, South, East or West of Seoul? |

| Yangpyeong, where I live. We're getting the subway but right now it's about a forty-five minute train ride. |

^That's cool.
More of the same please, although ideally with the all important and exclusive why factor if possible.
I'm low maintenance - anywhere with the bare minimole of suburban thrills, spills and bellyaches (amenities, ambiance and alcohol) etc will suffice. |

There are better options to help in your choice to live outside of Seoul.
I have been driving a car in Korea for 3 years. (I'll get back to that choice)
First, choose 1 or 2 destinations in Seoul that you want to get to.
Then, investigate what express buses radiate out to Incheon, Suwon, Uijungbu etc. You may need a Korean to help you do this, but be warned; this will be their first time using this mindset.
Select a place to live. Unfortunately this will usually be a highly populated "center" of business and residence. On a positive note, you are in a hub of convenience.
Where ever you choose to live, find the first stop of the express bus to Seoul, that garuntees you a seat on the bus!
EXPRESS BUSES ARE ALWAYS THE BEST ROUTE TO SEOUL FROM THE SUBURBS!
FYI:
My car insurance:
TICO: 290,000
PRIDE: 385,000
GRACE: 650,000
Fuel costs:
Because the engines here are tiny compared to back home, I spend the same amount on fuel as I would back home.
Parking Costs:
Use Emart, Lotte Mart where you can. Park and walk. You only pay 3% income tax, consider parking costs an extra tax payment to assist the Korean infrastructure!
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE TALK TO ME (PM) IF YOU WANT TO BUY A CAR. I purchased both my cars for retail value, but they only had 40,000 REAL km on them. They were '97 and '98. I have a secret about how to find these gems in the Korean Auto Marketplace! |

Why?
An hour or so from Seoul by express bus, only 25 min. by KTX. It's also on the subway line if you're cheap but have time to spare.
It's central and easy to travel anywhere in Korea.
It's big enough that you don't feel stifled because there are lots of foreigners, a movie theater, Outback, TGIF, all the fast food stuff, sports complex etc.
But small enough that you can get to know people pretty easily. There's a downtown crew that does Bowling/Pool/Poker on Mon, Wed, Fri nights.
Cheonan kind of has a reputation for the not-so crazy foreign population and I could definitely vouch for this.
In general, it's a pretty decent place to live. |
