For those that have been here for awhile, went home, and came back...how much time did take off? How much time did you need to cool off, chill, reconnect and mellow out?
I'm just curious, because I have an opporutnity to come back a month after I leave, and teach for what seems to be a pretty good hogwan.
2.3
National Pension/Insurance
MWF...2-8.....TR....3-8
2weeks vacation
SMALL CLASSES so I can actually teach again rather than be a tape recorder.
Nice owner, speaks really good English.
Small school, but has a good reputation in the area (Child U)
It would be a shame to pass it up (but if I do, I'll pass it on to someone)
So, how much time do you folks recommend? How much time did ya'll take off?

One month is exactly perfect for me.
After my first year I said I needed a month off to go back to Canada for Christmas, New Year's and travelling to visit friends. I got it and the time length was ideal.
After my second year I went to New Zealand for, you guessed it, exactly a month, and completed the CELTA, enjoying the southern January summers there on the weekends.
After my third year I took two weeks and IT WASN'T ENOUGH. It takes a week to get out of teacher-head mode. And in the last week one anticipates going back. Two weeks just doesn't cut it.
I took no break between my last contract and this one because I have a sweet position which gives me three-day weekends every week, Fridays off, with great students and work/living conditions, and I didn't want to push it, gladly re-signing for one more year, though I did contemplate several other options, including going back to my old job. But since 4-day workweeks have cured me of the burned-out, need-a-holiday feeling (especially with weekend travels: am impulsively on Geoje Island all this weekend) I'm not missing having a break. |

Yeah, I agree. Two weeks is not enough time.
I have been home once the past four years, and that one time was for tw and a half weeks.....split between having fun with friends, and sitting on my ass with family.
A month seems resonable, but I just don' t want to come back and realize that it was not enough time. Although, this time I'm going to see other family members who I have not seen in 7 years. And, I guess too much down time causes the ole' bank account to dwindle.
The problem is, is that I have to make a decision as to whether or not I will take this position, by next Friday. My mother wants me to decide after I have chilled for a bit. But, I dont' want to make a choice while I am there, and take the risk of coming back to a shite school.
This is a good opportunity, and the owner is really flexible. I can even have more vacation time for a little less salary.
But aother year ..............no plan on marrying a K-gal.................strictly for the money.....(well, and being able to actually teach again)..............
Meh.......well, if I don't, I'll pass on the job to someone else.

First time I went home was for 3 months. Mind you, I had no intention of coming back after the first year. I couldn't wait to get back after 2 months. The second time I went home for 2 weeks. It was mainly to surprise my mom, and visit my grandmother before she passed. 2 weeks was not enough time.
The last time I went home was for 1 month. I had recently married, and went from Seoul to Toronto (see mom, have a wedding party), to Fredricton (inlaws) back to Toronto, then to Vegas (honeymoon), back to Toronto, and then returned to Seoul. I left for the entire month of December, and it was just enough time. So, 5 years here, 3 times back home. I think it is also important to get a week of beach or travelling to places of interest at least twice a year. |
