So...I have this computer that my uncle was kind to find for me...but it's a little well, um, yeah:

samsung M6320

P3 1Ghz
128 mb RAM
40gig HD
48xCDROM (yes, cd-rom)
floppy
GeForce 2MX 32MB (4X AGP)
onboard audio
Windows XP
17" flat panel

two things: 1)I don't need it for much (internet, officeXP), BUT if I wanted to watch DVDs on this hunk of junk and put in a DVD-RW, what do I need to upgrade up to?
2) the fan is extremely extremely loud and the motor rotations sound...like it's dying. Should I save this beast and buy a nice size monitor with cabletv port, or buy a newer basic computer? I don't want to spend more than 300,000

I'm soo tempted to use the poll function to this topic...

For 300,000 you could pretty much gut the dinosaur.

New mainboard, HDD, onboard graphics and older CPU could all be grabbed and would run better than that machine could ever dream. Older P4s are dirt cheap, as are the mainboards that house them. The mainboard will have Intel graphics on it (no gaming, but there you go; 300k), sound and LAN. HDDs (IDE) are cheeeeepola. RAM is cheap for a GB of Samsung.

Reuse the case, mouse, keyboard and anything you can to save some cash.

You can get 1Gb of Samsung for 48,000 and probably cheaper if you use Danawa. Building a slightly older computer here is probably dirt cheap as most components are very good value (HD drives, DVD Burners, RAM, PSUs are all very cheap even with quality products, Samsung, LG and Seagate).

hahaha...I'm definitely not expecting to sell this huffing dinosaur. Nobody in their right mind would take him in. Unless to practice dissection...savages!

(haha...I had a mental image of a "savage geek" and I see a zombie-like Napoleon Dynamite, wearing nerdy geek-chic gear...)

So I'm assuming that the best thing would be to put it to sleep...? I was really looking forward to getting a 21" monitor...bwa~

in regards to components, if I'm looking at spending 300ish, how much should I slice off for each part? I'm keeping the peripherals.
