I'm thinking of joining a gym again and trying some protein shakes.
Roughly how much will I spend on protein per month, working out 3 times a week? (assuming I buy it online)

Does that stuff actually work?

Yes, it actually works. If you are moderately serious about lifting weights, then protein shakes before and after the gym are invaluable, and they are also useful as a supplement to your whole food protein which can be quite expensive here in Korea.

How much will you spend per month if you buy online? Not much. A 10 lb. tub lasts anywhere from 2-4 months depending on how nuts you go with it and costs around 50 to 60,000 won.

Have a Korean friend help you order from this site, it's really good:

www.mass119.com

It'll be just 10,000 won shipping for everything you order. Make it worth your while and stock up.

Eat some chicken dude. Skinless and broiled or bbq'd.

Eat right and work out and you'll be fine. Protein powder is a waste of money. I only use it when I'm fasting.

I usually order from the States and I order a lot. Shipping is only about 50 bucks so it is not too bad. I personally order Nitro-Tech and Cell-Tech together, which have given me awesome results.

I suppose those things work. I can't recall how much I spent on those things back home (years ago), but I went from 80kgs to over 100kgs in a year or two. Mostly muscles, but also the effects of pizza and beer.

Someone at the time told me that buying a tin of skim milk powder would be just as good. I have no idea if that is true, anyone have an idea about this? It would be a lot cheaper. (I am sure some benefits are different for sure though, but I am far from being a dietician).

I'm taking Bioplex 100% Whey. A ten lb. tub costs 57,000 won or so, plus about 10,000 won shipping from mass119.

I just get vanilla since it pretty much mixes well with anything. It tastes like cake batter, especially if you mix it with milk. However, as good as it tastes, it gets old so you'll probably want to mix something in sooner or later to break up the monotony. I would also suggest you start taking some kind of fiber supplement. You'll understand why soon enough.

Yeah, if you want to maintain the same amount of lean muscle mass. I guess it depends on your goals.

If you're looking to bulk up, apply this simple formula. You should be at least consuming 1 gram of protein for every pound you weigh, every day. That combined with a weight lifting routine centered around high weight, low reps, and you should see noticable results in a month.

1 chicken breast contains about 25 grams of protein, and 8 chicken breasts a day seems a bit much for me, dude.

Protein powder is an excellent supplement if you want to put on some solid muscle.

Also, if you are looking to add muscle mass, make sure you are working out your large muscle groups. Everyone and their dog works chest and biceps, but if you want muscle gains, you won't neglect your legs and back.

Personally, I do squats 3 times a week, deadlifts once a week, bench press twice a week, barbell rows twice a week, chin-ups once a week, and overhead press once a week. I also occasionally do a few curls, dips, and tricep extensions, though you won't really need to work your arms much after all the large compound movements.

Three times a week for squats? Twice a week for bench press? Isn't that a bit too frequent?

My body is like most others, and needs more rest than that to get good gains. I'm sure you're getting stronger, but you might actually be impeding your development by working those groups out so frequently. I work each major muscle group once a week.

For example:

Mon: light cardio, Chest and Tris

Tues: Cardio

Wed: Back and Bis

Thurs: Rest

Friday: light cardio, Shoulders and Legs

Sat: Rest

Sun: Cardio and Abs

Of course, I switch it up every 3 weeks or so, doing different combinations of body parts and exercises.

Every body is different...you just have to figure out what works well for you.

Oh yeah, and protein powder works well.

Second on mass119 as well.

Thanks for all the advice - I just wish my Korean was good enough to use the website!
