I teach two classes at University which are optional classes. i.e. no credit for completion.
1. English conversation class 200,000 won per semester (20 students)
2. Free Resume and Interview Workshop class. (Monthly) (10 Students)
Every time my students slowly dwindle away until maybe only 2-4 students are attending classes regularly.
My boss thinks maybe its because of me.. I interview my students and get them to fill out class reviews...they all same I am good teacher and they enjoy the class.... but same thing happens every time..
Please help me... does anyone else have no-credit classes and low attendance or do you all have high attendance..
any feedback is really appreciated as well as any advice...
Thanks.....

An opitional class in university for no credit.
I'd say screw it and let's go party. Why bother?
It's definitely not your fault. |

Would you have gone to such a thing while at uni? I'm guess less than 10% would answer "yes", no doubt because they had a real interest in the subject. Judging by that assumption, your student attendance record is excellent. Congratualations: you good teacha. |

It happens in the adult hagwons, too. If there's no credit or ther's no grading, where is the incentive to keep going? Skipping a class has no penalty or repurcussions... by the end of the month, students get lazy or bored or busy and this is one thing they can ditch without worrying about failing. |

Same thing here. I've been teaching a morning class at the uni I'm at for about 3 years. At the start of the year there's about 10-15 students. By the end of the year there's 2-5. It's the same everywhere.
They already paid their money...the uni isn't losing money...who cares. Enjoy your free paid time. |

good tip - for this kind of class keep it fun - no politics/social stuff. just find some good group discussion topics with a focus on form. also, try and play the guys and girls off each other - the sexual tension can often keep them coming back. try to take the class out for drinks at the beginning of the month too so they feel more personable towards you.
None of my uni adults classes are graded but they keep coming back for more, so now the students complain that my class is overbooked! |

"Head of a dragon, tail of a snake." Koreans are famous for starting strong and finishing weak (if at all), and they readily acknowledge this about themselves.
Tell your boss about that expression. It'll help you out. |

Im thinking, mark 80% of students attended the class and everybodys happy
As long as the boss doesn't find out haha!
Actually Im not sure he really cares that much I think Im the token white guy, gracing the website for P.R. and Marketing!
However the paying students I worry about.. I want them to get their value for money... part time jobs pay about 3000 won per hour, so for them its a lot of money...
Maybe I should bring soju and Ramyon to class!!! |

I teach credit classes that are required and the attrition rate is apalling. Once class started at 42 and is now down to 12. Student apathy, assigning homework, and actually expecting them to earn their grade with real work makes my life easier. The school is not worried, as long as the students don't complain. The only complaint they can make is that they are too lazy to complete the course so no worries.
As for the OP, don't sweat it. If the school is making its money then they won't care much. I would never have even signed up for such a course in Uni... beer was a higher priority. |
