My co-teacher just informed me that if I volunteer for an 11 or 12 day summer camp then I will be paid 2 million won, in addition to my normal salary. I was also told that the camp is optional and that I don't have to do it. If I'm getting an extra $2,000 though then it sounds like a pretty good deal. Anyone else heard of this?

I haven't heard of it. Then again, i'll et the offer the day before the camp starts.

I'm pretty sure none of us will hear about a summer camp til a day or 2 either. I'm flabbergasted at the fact you got this much notice beforehand.

I was actually told of the summer camp about 3 weeks ago, but in typical GEPIK fashion, they informed me that I have 1 day to decide if I want to volunteer for the camp.

That's pretty sweet. The '06 GEPIK contracts stipulate up to forty hours of each summer and winter camps, with no more than 20 hours a week. No extra pay. I'd say that's a change for the better.

I've been offered the position too. I was told that if I wanted to take the offer my Korean teacher would have to apply for me by the 25th. They're asking teachers from approx. 30 schools but they only need around 18. If they don't have volunteers then they're going to pick randomly and make it mandatory. So I hope those who are interested volunteer for it - I've refused and don't really want to be forced to do it though the money does sound nice.

I got the same offer last week, had to reply by today. I agreed, thinking that I'd be payed in addition to my normal salary.

If that isn't the case, I'll be livid. But I can't imagine they'd pull something like that.

I am curious about one thing: I assumed this would be in addition to the forty hours and two weeks of "summer camp" mentioned in my contract. That was my only problem: accepting this summer camp seems like great money, but man will my summer be busy.

Is my assumption incorrect?

I think this is during the normal summer camp period. This optional camp that they told me about yesterday is during the same time as the mandatory camp I was informed of three weeks ago.

I was told that the 2million will be paid in addition to our normal salaries.

I'm trying to find out through my co-teacher what I would do if I don't teach in the camp. Would I get a couple of extra weeks of vacation? If so, then I may try to opt out of the camp and take a nice 3 or 4 week break. My co-teacher is calling someone in charge and I'll post an update later if there are new developments regarding the pay, location, hours, etc..

The camp will take place at either Gangwon University or Yongin Foreign Language University. You may either sleep at the campus or you can commute. The camp will be held for 12 or 13 days, and this INCLUDES weekends (both Saturday and Sunday). Every teacher is responsible for their own curriculum. The students will range from 5th grade to 2nd grade middle school. The 2million will be paid in addition to your normal salary. Everything is optional, unless they do not get enough volunteers, at which point they will choose people at random.

Rumour has it that ALL schools, regardless of how cozy your relationship with your school has been in the past are clamping down, and instituting mandatory camps & clamping down on the unofficial vacations are cross the board, both GEPIK/EPIK and SMOE wide (though SMOE may go another way as there is some antagonism between said programs).

Look to work by the exact letter of your contract, the next one you sign.

That is what contracts are for isn't it?

Does anybody else find it strange that we complain when schools don't honor the contract for our benefits. Yet we complain when they won't bend it for our benefit either.

We can't have it all ways.

No, I don't find it strange at all. When there are shortage of teachers, everything should lean to our side. It works the opposite way when and if there are glut of teachers in the market.

It's the teachers' market.
