|
|
This summer, I am going to attempt to do the 12-week Artist's Way program based on the book by Julia Cameron. Amazon describes the book :
Quote: |
With the basic principle that creative expression is the natural direction of life, Julia Cameron and Mark Bryan lead you through a comprehensive twelve-week program to recover your creativity from a variety of blocks, including limiting beliefs, fear, self-sabotage, jealousy, guilt, addictions, and other inhibiting forces, replacing them with artistic confidence and productivity |
Basically, you do various exercises to help recover your creativity. Although some of what I've heard seems a little cheesy, I know of people who have written novels and plays while doing or just after finishing this course. Someone else I knew started painting at the age of 42 ( and was quite good at it) as a result of this book. A woman friend of mine, quite an accomplished and respected poet, who was also a little skeptical, swears that this book changed her life.
I have tried in the past to do this book on my own, but I lacked the commitment to get much beyond week 2. A lot of people say that the course works best when done in groups.
So, I am wondering if there is any interest in putting together a group to work through the course over the summer - being flexible about things like vacations and such, of course. We would meet once a week to discuss the exercises, and perhaps start a message board for posting execrcises. We would keep each other accountable, and share ideas.
Any interest? Post or pm me.
Also, if anyone has done this course, I would love to hear about your experiences.
Thanks |

The best way to "recover" your creativity (in my opinion) is to drink one of those huge green bottles of dong dong ju, and then head straight for Texas Street in Pusan. I wonder if Julia Cameron and Mark Bryan have ever tried that..................maybe we could all meet once a month, drink a couple of bottles of dong dong ju, and head out to Texas street together.
Or even better........
we can all dress up like mormons, get name plates and all, go to Family mart, buy a bunch of bottles of dong dong ju, head out to Texas street, and hand out free condoms. I bet that would get rid of the "variety of blocks, including limiting beliefs, fear, and self-sabotage". Heck, I am going to do that right now! |

Yes Texas street will have that effect.
Kinda like a Grateful Dead concert.
You'll never be the same again.

From Amazon, the price is only 13 cents,
and the shipping and handling brings itup to $12.62.
My problem, though, isn't in coming up with creative ideas,
but finding time to put those ideas into practice.
I hope the book can help me on that score.

For those who have pm'd and have posted interest here, the frequency, time and place of meeting will be determined by whover is in the group. The idea is to be flexible "new age arses" so that we can keep the commitment up.
After a couple of more days, I will pm everyone who has expressed interest to talk about start dates... |

I'm halfway through the book now, but I'm not impressed.
I still don't see the purpose of the "morning papers" exercise.
Is it to capture brilliant ideas which were revealed in our dreams?
The last thing I dreamed about this morning was typing the words 열린 여름 (open summer") into the computer. What do those two words have in common besides the same initial letter?
I can't imagine this exercise having any purpose except to gratify the followers' need for a guru and the author's need for disciples. |

Hi there,
I have done The Artist's Way twice. The first time, I completed all the exercises, but could not commit to the Artist Dates or the Morning Pages. The second time, I lapsed on the exercises and AD's, but did the Morning Pages religiously.
I found it was generally helpful and inspiring as a jumping off point, and can be applied to a great number of disciplines.
I'd be up for meeting and trying again in a group setting - in what area are you located?

Tomato -
The point of the morning pages is to "drain the brain" - to get rid of the mental clutter so that you are free to be more creative and clear during the day.
These types of things don't work for everybody. They do have value for some.
I think now that we have enough interest to put together a group.
I will pm with possible dates.... |
