Ever since I came across Negroponte's inspiring idea of One Laptop Per Child, I've been heartened by the possibilities and the good vibes, this whole project engenders. Great leap forward, great machines also.
I made a whole 200min lesson around this and every time, students were amazed and it led to great discussion. Last night, I was even more amazed at hearing the words of Negroponte himself on CBS.
You can find out more info at www.laptop.org or even better this page on wiki, http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Home Amazing machines and at heart, his idea is plain and simple. Build it and they will learn.
I loved his response when asked "Why are you doing this? What's in it for you?" -- "Nothing". Too much education is a business, a concern which the mainly already well to do, become more well to do....
I also disagreed in part with the young technician's disagreement that simply giving the students a computer won't lead them to "education". I firmly believe this is the future and that with the proper tools that technology has in its future, we can all teach ourselves, collaboratively , with others and not by others. The teacher will be in the dust bin of history .
I do think these kids can learn how to use a computer without a teacher.
But a great idea. Let's support it, however we can (buying two laptops and one going to a child) or just writing Intel and telling them to knock off their efforts to undermine the project.

I think it's a great idea. When I look at the history of the computer/software industry, I see it was founded by young kids who got started early and just started hacking around, saw a problem, and tried to fix it. It's a great "teach a man to fish, not give him a fish" example. Who knows that millions of third world kids are going to hack together. |
