Ok, so I have a problem I can't fix.
Today, while playing neverwinter nights 2, I had an odd graphic glitch. I stopped the game, and noticed I had the same thing on windows, kind of a double vision almost. I restarted. The computer came on, then immediately the monitor went to standby.
Now, When I turn on the computer, the led's go up, the fans start up, the dvd-rom runs a check, and...thats it. The keyboard shows nothing, the mouse and monitor act as if the computer is off. There is no POST, no bios beeps, nothing...
What could this be?

Could be a virus. Could be hardware. If you on a desktop I would first try re-seating the video card.

Then try resetting the bios.

doubt its a virus as its not hooked up to internet, I've removed and reset the video card...and everything else internally. Currently, I'm removing the battery in an attempt to reset CMOS. Good ideas though

Try re-seating your ram also.

also a good idea...but done, in fact I've tried the following:

Reseating ram
Removing ram
Systematically removing each part to test if thats the one
reseating the video card
removing and replacing all jumpers
removing and replacing battery
letting the computer sit for a few hours
holding del at start, to enter BIOS...
nothing has worked

the symptoms in order
Turn on-> LEDs and fans start, computer monitor blinks on (but no display), keyboard lights blink on, dvd lights blink
2 seconds pass
Monitor blinks to standby, keyboard lights turn off and are unresponsive, fans continue, dvd is still responsive
NOTE- at no time does the Hard disk indicate movement, no sounds at all (and yes, I turned off the dvd to confirm lack of sound).

My possible diagnostics (bearing in mind that I know primarily of software and very little of actual hardware)
Bad Power supply (but why do the fans work, the dvd work, and why is there no BIOS beep codes)
Motherboard fried (possible, but I hope not)
Hard disk error (I have no reason to think this other than its lack of movement- but if this is the reason, then why is there no BIOS)

Have you looked for you motherboard model on the internet? If its from a reputable maker, there should be a support forum that would probably be very useful.

Did you say you are getting no beeps at all? If your PSU was blown I'd guess you wouldn't have your fans and LEDs start.

Did you have your graphics card overclocked a lot?

I would be worried about the hard drive making no noise. You may have a crashed hard drive.

Another possibiity.......long shot, but it happened to me so I'll throw it in..........if you are connecting to the monitor by a digital cable (DVI) then you may have lost digital signal. Try using an analog cable. That's what I had to do.

its a unitech vpm890 green. They didn't have forums, so I sent out an emaill to their customer support- good call.
The gfx card is an nvidia 7600 gt, so I really had no need to overclock it.

The heatsink, eh...now THAT is an idea.I will try that next.

crashed hard drive...yeah, that IS a possibility. I just got this computer up and running. It took some physical damage (despite being labled FRAGILE...thanks, Korean air). I thought the fact that it ran for a day meant I was in good shape...

As far as the cable, I am using the old skool blue analog, as the dvi never worked- besides that would still produce a bios beep.

If the HD doesn't start up from the beginning it might be botched.

As such your OS won't be read and you won't start up.

Fear the worst for your HD

Systematically replace each component at a time.

Well, this was easier done back in the US. I'd basically buy a bunch of parts from Best buy, open them up and replace everything one by one to figure out what it was that went bad. As soon as I found out, I would return everything to Best Buy and get a full refund. Then I would take the defective part and RMA it.

Actually, no beeps would probably indicate a dead Mainboard. It ALWAYS beeps to tell you there is a problem with other components. But what's to beep if the motherboard is dead...nothing.

Would anything happen though if the motherboard was dead?
