Does anyone here go trekking / backpacking here in Korea? I've been here 3 months now and haven't been to nature enough. I went with my school on a hiking trip, but it was pathetic, sure the scenery was nice, but it was a line of people going up the mountain. What i really want is some solitude. I also enjoy getting away from everything for a weekend (or longer) and just being in the woods, building a fire etc. Does solitude exist in Korea? Are trails well marked and are there maps around that are readable? Any advice or info would be greatly helpful.

Soraksan is awesome. You'll love it. Here's a link:

Also some of the smaller islands around Korea are pretty quiet. You can have a fire on a beach and feel like you're at home.

Check out the site www.tour2korea.com

Good luck though in finding solitude. The only places I found some peace and quiet were on some of the islands in the south. Most of the mountain parks are packed with people over weekends.

There is a lot of information on the above website about the small islands.

Yeah - try to get some time off on a weekday if you want any solitude. There's a nice mountain right behind where I live. I've climbed it with a friend during off-season, climbed it with my school several times, and climbed it with some Korean friends on a Sunday during 'climbing season' with 20,000 or so Koreans. To say the least the experience varied quite a bit.

If you have a motorbike or car just drive out somewhere, find a place to park, lock your vehicle, and head into the woods. Doesn't have to be trail, either. You'll find a trail eventually. I've found ones from years ago that are not used anymore. Tent and you're set.

I plan on backpacking/trekking through Kyeongju and Gangwondo during my summer vacation in 2 months from now. I hope to sleep in those mountain huts and even camp out under the stars. It would be nice to have a bon fire with other people and stick pieces of meat on sticks over the fire and get drunk.

I was told time after time that camping is not a Korean thing to do. It is my thing to do. I went camping on a mountain side once already this season. I was walking along a trail on a Friday afternoon and spotted an old shack partially caved in, so I camped out and got drunk while I listened to CD's though my head phones gazing up into the night sky. I woke up early in the morning with birds mere inches from me chirping away. It was so divine. Then kids came running down the path around 10 AM screaming thier heads off that was some 20 feet lower than where I was laying, I stayed still, and they ran on without finding me. Ha ha. Thank God.

Just sneak off and hide out someplace where no one will not find you in the morning.

Yeah, I just hiked to the top of Daechongbang yesterday with my school... Thats a killer hike. Very beautiful and you can put it up against most hikes in North Am for beauty and difficulty.
