Does anyone have any experience with this guy's service?
http://www.koreanuniversityjobs.com/
It seems like a good idea but he's got at least one typo on his website... I hate to be a beatch... but usually if I see a typo I start to question the quality of the product/service being sold. |

Just another marketing scam. "Well done that man". These guys can't help themselves. The best marketing scam I've heard (and seen) was from an Australian marketing graduate. He sold/franchised the rights to cut peoples' backyard grass. Hilarious. it's called "Jim's Lawns or Landscaping" (something like that). Demoralised, unemployed, 50 year-old men were lining up to spend their life-savings on the franchise. On buying an area franchise they were given a list of names and a sign for their truck. Jim made his fortune without breaking a sweat.
Only a moment's thought would've shown that they could've gone through the yellow pages themselves and cold-called random households in their area. Better yet, they could've simply driven around and searched for houses with large grounds/gardens needing attention. But they were fooled by the psychological 'hooks' in the marketer's patter - spent their money on nothing - and got some paper and a sign. Interestingly, giving the sucker (sorry, customer) some paper is a clever psychological ploy - as they feel they have 'bought' (something?) and when the marketer's inflated outcome doesn't happen - they feel it's their own fault. Brilliant.
I'm not going to buy a university job - but I'll consider any swampland this guy has to offer. As long as I get some paper. |

What I am going to do is leave it at $49 until the end of the day on Saturday, May 26. At that point, I will see how many people have taken advantage of the package, and decide from there if I should raise the price to either $99 or $149. For me, it's good either way. Although perhaps less people will buy it at $149, the increase in price will make up for it, and it will be better for people like you who get it at $49, but don't necessarily want everyone else getting it.

The "until the end of the day...." keeps moving ahead. Sounds awfully fishy to me |

There used to be something called EST.
You paid $300 or $600 for the training and then
you convince yourself that you got something
out of it so you don't have to admit to yourself
that you spend all that money on nothing.
Of course you still aren't sure so you tell a
friend how great it was and go again with
your friend.
A newer version of the company got a big
contract with the University of Missouri Kansas City.

I just read the whole thing. To be fair you do get a basic job hunting package. After you've read a few resume books, done a few job
hunts, and attended some career workshops you don't need that
stuff but a lot of people do. If you figure typical job hunting
books cost around $20 each then for some people it may not
be a bad deal.
I used to wonder why people paid to fix the easiest things on their
computer but now I know that some people will pay a lot of money
to not learn something if it makes them feel better. |

I'll probably buy it just because I don't have the time or energy to do all the research he appears to have done.
Reallistically $49 is about the price of a night on the town.
You gotta love the photos though. Did he actually work at Yonsei? |

49 bucks for info you can pull off the internet in no time flat. Joke of a scam. Buyer beware. |

|
|
Hello...thanks for your honest and brutal feedback. I must say it's an interesting challenge to have people rip into you after you put some effort into trying to do something well and with good intentions. But, such is the nature of dealing with Dave's! Not for the weak!
Anyhow, I would like to address a few things and explain, and perhaps even request more feedback.
First, I must apologize for that date thing. I didn't feel good about doing that at first, and I should have went with my initial instinct. My desire to create motivation overcame my knowledge that this would be a potentially insulting form of marketing. Thus, I have removed it and I'm sorry for insulting anyone's intelligence.
Onward...
chaz47, please let me know about the typo. I just noticed the spelling of uni in the title. That sucks! If there are any others, feel free to let me know via pm...in fact, if you do, I'll send you the package for free so you can evaluate it for yourself as an unbiased third party. (as a thank you for pointing it out to me)
Juregen...fall for what? That there is an actual package that will be sent to you? I must point out the following quote from the site:
Quote: |
If you are not willing to put any effort into getting a university position, then you should probably stop reading right now, because it's just not going to happen for you.
I'm sorry for being blunt, but people who are just plain lazy would not benefit from this information and will likely never get ahead in life. But, people like you, who are willing to put a little bit of effort in now so that they can relax and enjoy themselves later are the type of people I can help.
|
In case you misunderstood, I'm not promising anyone a job. I am offering a package to assist in their job search.
Tokki1, I guess the same would apply. I'm not sure if people get the impression that your money will disappear, or if you just don't believe that the package is worth the price (fair if that's your estimation of it after having reviewed it) Oh, and if you think those are hot Korean girls, maybe you should come visit Daegu for a few days, or hang out at the main crosswalk at Gangnam station for a few hours. I'm actually going to start to believe that you are located in Pyongyang! (sorry, had to have some fun at your expense, as you are at mine!)
oldfatfarang, thanks for package-dealing what I'm offering with a landscaping franchise. I'm not sure what this guy was selling, and whether it is a rip-off or not. Perhaps it was an actual system. Anyone can cut lawns, but not anyone can put together a system on how to run a company. If all they were given was a list of names and a sign, perhaps they didn't do their due diligence thoroughly enough. No one is selling you a job, but sure, if you want to buy some swampland, I'll try to track something down for you!
pocariboy73, you are right. I was wrong. Thank you!
Dogshed, thanks for reading the whole thing (you are probably one of the few who make comments after evaluating!)
I agree with what you say about people not wanting to take the time to do something that may seem easy to you, but not to them. There is a price for convenience. A few years ago, we had a maid come and clean our apartment in Daechi-dong...not because we didn't know how to clean, but because we just wanted the place to be clean without having to do it ourselves. It was worth paying for...exchanging money for time.
Also, this package is much, much more specific to Korea than an ordinary job hunting book would be.
kingtout...had trouble getting to that link, but I believe I've seen it before. No, that's not what the package has. That is a list of unis with links to some of their sites. What it doesn't have is a list of over 370 unis and their physical mailing address to send in your application package, already pre-formatted on labels so you can just print and not have to write out a single address by hand, nor search for it on every different site.
That, combined with a lot more research into job search and Korean culture etc...
PRagic...perhaps you are right...why not do everyone a favor and provide them with a list of 370 school mailing addresses on pre-formatted labels, website addresses for all of these schools in Excel format, a list of 500 contact names and email addresses of people in English departments at unis in Korea, and an 18,000 word book on how to best approach landing a job at a uni in Korea. It will save everyone $49 and they would all appreciate it very much. While you're at it, please don't forget to include the tracking sheet and application package checklist as well as some resume and cover-letter templates. As you said, you can do it in no time flat, so perhaps by tomorrow?
For those of you who didn't take time to read the information and just came to your own conclusion that this is a scam just by nature of the fact that something is for sale, I am sorry that you have become so skeptical.
If you would also take the time to read all of the information, you would notice that I do offer you the chance to have your money returned to you should you not be satisfied with your purchase.
So, if you thought that what you receive isn't worth $49, no problem. You can have your $49 back. I don't mind taking the risk and putting it on me instead of on you. I can be skeptical too (not as much as some people though!)
And for those who think that's a lie too, then I'm sorry that you have come to mistrust all things so much. You must have had some bad experiences.
For anyone who would like to provide constructive feedback, I am more than willing to listen. Hopefully we can keep it intelligent and do away with the name-calling and swearing as it reflects poorly on everyone, don't you think?
Thanks
Jason |
