One of my students says exactly that to me everyday, with no pauses, just as you wrote it. He's been doing it about a month now. Is is a punchline off some gagshow or something?

last night talking to some adult students. They said they have been taught to say that since Kindergarten and its considered the most perfect sentence to use to a foriegner or so they were taught.

They now find it absolutely hilarious when I tell them that my students still use it. I told them that its time for a change if that is the most perfect sentence.

It does help explain a lot about Korea and their english if they are taught that.

I know. I found out that the teachers at my High School actually think that's the only greetings we have in English.

I know have my students banned from usin it and have taught them how to say how they really feel.

And if they say they feel great or terrible or any other expressions I've taught them, I also make them tell me why. I reckon they'll thank me for it one day if they ever travel abroad or interact with foriegners....

There is the joke of the Korean visiting (fill in city name) in the U.S. and is in an accident. The paramedics arrive and one of them asks, "Sir, that was a bad accident. How are you?" The Korean groans, "I'm fine, thank you. And you?"

(on Friday...)

Students, essentially in unison: "See you to-mor-row!!!!"

Me: "Ahhh, so you're headed to the pub, too. Fabulous. See you there!"

...and they know what 'tomorrow' means. It was justs drilled into their heads at an early age that it's an everyday, every situation goodbye. I could possibly well see them later that same day. It's something I don't even address anymore. Just funny in an eye-rolling way.

Very Happy

Seriously guys - teach your kids more expressions!

As a 'teacher' I think we should be getting our students used to saying greetings and goodbyes more creatively at least...

I'm great
I feel sick
I'm awful
I feel good

etc....

I spent an entire day teaching my students other expressions to use. They learned, "not bad, thanks" and "ok" and even "not good"... and in class, I had em answering truthfully.

Then, I see em walking around town, and they're still like "Hi, I am Ji-wan, nice to meet you..." I am thinking it has to do with how they are socialized to consider "foreigner" as being equal to "thing" rather than "person". Or maybe they're just stupid.

That sucks man.

Well what I did is spent two whole fifty minute classes teaching them expressions and explainations -

I feel great!

Why?

Becuase it's sunny / becasue I had a nice breakast etc...

I feel terrible!

Why? - becuase I have a toothache / English test etc....

Then every morning for the last two months I spent the first five minutes of each class asking ten studetns at random - Hi how are you. I do not let them answer I'mfinethankyouandyou?

The first two weeks, yeah, like you said, they wouldn't let go of it.

But now a couple of months later, after five minutes each class, they have fianally changed their 'Imfinethankyouandyou?' ways...

Well, at least half of them anyway. Better than none I guess.

Cool

Change is very seldom instantaneous.

Except in the case of disasters.
