1) Children's designer clothes. The idea for this thread came to me whan I was looking at my Korean friend's 6 year old daughter wearing her Polo jacket and FILA shirt. Sure they could be fakes, but the quality looked a little too good. Anyway, I was think how wasteful it is to buy designer labels for kids. I'm sure the kids don't care about labels. It's for the parents to show off their kids.

Interestingly enough, the parents dress pretty frugally. Seems to be part of Korean culture to spend every last won on their kids and as little as possible on yourself. Well, whatever works for them I guess.

2) Going to bars. This is my personal opinion. I think it's an extravagance to spend an upwards of 200,000 won a month on beer and drinks. Bars in Seoul are way more expensive than bars in my country, so I just can't do it. Coffee shops too. 5000 won for a latte? That's over $6 Canadian for a lousy coffee. Ouch!

How about you? What's a waste of money in your eyes?

Yes, I agree that going to bars and coffee shops here is a big waste as it's over priced. I find it's better to drink your booze and coffee in your apartment granted that these things are expensive at HomePlus stores, but not as much so as going out to drink them.

On topic, cigarettes are a big waste, but horribly addictive to the point that many highly intellegent people such as college professors, business leaders, and scientists smoke them all thier lives despite clearly understanding the ill effects. Cigarettes are probably one of the biggest wastes of time of money due to thier most highly addictive nicotine.

If you are cheap, anything done out that could be done at home (bars, coffe shops etc...) are expensive. Of course, you are paying for other things -- a place to hang out, utilities, convenience...which some people want.

I think people who drive rather than take public transportation are wasting a bundle but that is just me.

My ex gf's father got one of those Lexis SUVs. If you're going to get a nice car, great. Dont get a gold-plated hiking boot, though.

Another thinly disguised anti-Korea troll, Dev? At least keep them in the General Forum where you are more likely to attract the sentiment you desire.

I couldn't agree with you more since Seoul has the best public transit I have ever seen.

This is not LA where there's no subway, poor bus service and everything's spread out. In LA, you absolutely need a car. In Seoul, it seems like a total waste.

Maybe you're a conservative who flames people for speaking their minds out on Dave's trying to limit the range of opinions. This is not a pro-Korea board or an anti-Korean board. It's everything board.

I don't know what up with you too but what he listed is true in the U.S. too...

What I can't stand is when I was back in NYC and I'd see toddlers and infants wearing Nike shoes...

It's like HELLO! For the money you spent on that crap that will last for 2 months, you could funding your child's college fund!

I don't agree with the coffee as I need it(or I'll die) and the store stuff is swill. I'm with you on the kid's clothes 100%, kids don't need designer clothes.

The kids clothes, yes.
I don't know about the coffee shop though. Yes, it's a lot for coffee. But, it's good to get you out of the house, good place to study or read a book, and usually a lot of hotties are present.

Flaming? Let's douse that dramatic flamboyance, shall we? As you put it: "It's everything board," which includes acknowledging a poster's steady MO and bringing it to the attention of newbs. Imagine if we just let jinju go around posting without deconstruction? Chaos. Violence. Warfare. With a few brief words of explanation, he becomes the cuddly bunny that he really is.

And to the other poster, I see your point, and of course people waste money everywhere in the world. However, you are seeing a universal in a more narrow example, whereas Dev's MO is to use universal themes to obliquely (barely) attack his regular specific target, which can be just about anything Korean on any given day. I would guess that one would be hard-pressed to find a thread that Dev started that does not follow this pattern:

1. Innocuous-seeming theme.
2. Brief exposition on his point of view.
3. More strongly-worded and specific anti-Korean example.
4. Open-ended conclusion to the effect of "What do you all think?"

If the shoe fits Dev...

And you are of course well within your rights to post what and how you like, but no one here is required to politely ignore your antics--just to remain polite while discussing their lengthy precedent. The only flame thus far was your personal insult about me being a conservative (which make absolutely no sense) and your accusation of flaming. Ironic, n'est-ce pas?

Remember Dev, engineers who attempt to breach walls always run the same risk.

But do carry on. In every sense of the phrase, if you like.

I've thought a lot about the bar thing- mostly cause I go to bars a lot. Sure, the markup on drinks is huge (though if drinks seem expensive here compared to back home, you are from a broke-a-s-s country) but bars have been popular as long as they have existed for a reason.

It's hard to put your finger on the exact reason, but there is something nice about drinking at a bar surrounded by other people having a good time.

Drinking as a social event in your one room apartment is for high school students and college freshmen. Exception- drinking with your significant other.

Having a few (or quite a few) drinks on your own at home is a-ok as far as I'm concerned. [no footnote]

All that said, I think the biggest waste of money is bul galbi. If you aren't eating dwaeji galbi, you are either rich and don't care, or just retarded.
