So here's my deal. I worked with SMOE last year (2005-2006). I want to come back to Korea, so I was looking for a summer camp. So I've lived in Korea and know what I should be expecting, but I need some expert opinions on this one.

Here is part of my contract. The pay is not good, at all, but they are paying for the ticket, which is quite expensive ($1200). Actually, this was the only summer job I found that was willing to fly people in from outside of Korea...
I want to go back to Korea so badly I'll even work on Saturdays....

Anyway, here it is...

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Workload
The Teacher will have at least 42 45minute classes per teaching week. The class time will have 4 language classes, 3 special classes and some additional duties for outdoor activities (See Appendix 1 for detailed class schedule). The Teacher may be required to substitute teach as part of the regular teaching workload.

The Teacher must spend no less than 1.5 hours a day at the University for lesson planning with co-teacher, student evaluations, reporting, consultation with parents, interview with new students, supervision of play, maintenance of the English environment during breaks, workshops, teachers meetings, school events and upgrading ones professional knowledge and skills.

Any part of the Teachers workload can be converted into research and development work under his or her supervisors instruction as well as interview and consultation with students or their parents.

Teachers meetings may be scheduled before or after every day schedule at the discretion of the Director or Academic Director. Attendance is required if scheduled. Teachers meetings will allow time for discussion of topics of current concern within the program such as new policies, procedures, methods of training, instruction, curriculum, and other matters as needed. The Teachers are encouraged to help work out practical solutions to problems at these meetings.

2. Work Schedule
The workweek runs from Monday through Saturday in the English Summer Camp periods. The Director and Academic Director will assign the Teachers schedule.

3. Covenants
The Teacher hereby agrees covenants and undertakes that he or she will not disclose any information relating to the Teachers employment conditions to others, any teaching materials, or any information relating to program and curriculum, whether verbally or in written, to individuals or corporate entities. All teaching materials including any books given to the Teacher by the University and reference materials prepared for the classes by the Teacher should be returned after using and the Teacher must not take out or use the materials for other purpose but teaching in the University.

TEACHER BENEFITS
1. Monthly Salary
The teacher will be paid 1.6 million won in Korean currency for the entire contract period on the last working day of the English Summer Camp.
Korean law requires the University to withhold national and local taxes(3.3% of Total amount of salary) from the Teachers salary.

2. Housing
The University will provide the Teacher with a fully furnished single or shared apartment/house(See Appendix 3 for detailed list of appliances and furniture to be provided.). The Teacher is fully responsible to pay for the monthly utilities(electricity, garbage removal, water charges etc.. The Teacher is responsible for any damage to the apartment due to negligence. All items provided by the University must remain in the apartment at the end of the Teachers contract. (actually, I was told we are living in dorms, whatever that will mean..)

3. Health Insurance
The Teacher will be covered by Health Insurance Plan. The insurance charge will be 100% covered and paid by the University only during English Summer Camp period. However, the disease occurred before arriving in Korea will not be covered by the health insurance plan.

5. Paid Sick Leave and Emergency Leave
The teacher understands that there is no sick leave during the contract period. If the teacher wishes to be late or absent for class time at any reason, the University can deduct the payment(one day leave shall be calculated as total salary divided by 30 days(salary / 30 days).

6. Airfare
The University shall pay round-trip airfare between the nearest International Airport from the Teacher's place applied and a major city in Korea. The University shall arrange and present the itinerary of the teacher as well as the round-trip airfare for the teachers convenience. The round-trip airfare of actual purchasing price shall be reimbursed by the University based on an economy class airfare no later than 5 days after her or his arrival. The airfare higher than the presented price shall not be paid and shall be the teachers responsibility.

However, the teacher who signed on the reimbursement contract with his or her agent can be paid for the airfare prior to his or her departure.

The University reserves a right to keep the teachers return ticket for the reason of safety and the Universitys policy. The round-trip ticket shall be given back to the teacher under the condition that the teacher well performs on her or his duties until the contract ends. In this regard, the teacher who leaves the country without fulfilling the duty for any reasons should pay back the paid round-trip airfare to the University. Round-trip airfare is provided only once.

7. Teacher Training
The Teacher shall have a period of training before starting to teach in the University. During the training period, and for the break between the training and the start of teaching, the Teacher will be in the University and the designated training places for classroom observations and preparations. The Teacher will receive briefings from the Academic Director, and will get acquainted with the University policies. The teacher shall not be paid for training session.

(Extra info:)
The only thing I know about the company is the guy or recruiter or whoever I am going through works for World Pacific. http://www.worldpacific.ca/

The camp is just a day camp, so I would be free at 5 each day and start around 9 in the morning. And Sundays are off.

The actual camp is July 23-August 21. We have some sort of training/planning for a week before it starts and "reporting" for 4 days after.

Oh, and ofcourse they havent decided the location yet. All I know is "the edge of Seoul", whatever that means. Since it is only a day camp, it has to be on the subway line, right???

I appreciate any insights anyone can give me.
Thank you so much!!!!

The 3.3 % tax rate doesn't look right to me ... Especially on salary of 1.6 million

IMO, that is a terrible contract. Last summer I saw a camp on Jeju that was paying 4million, but you had to provide your own airfare. Even if you had to pay for your own ticket you'd be pocketing 2.8. I suggest waiting for some other offers
