Insanity. While purusing Dave's while I'm supposed to be doing some work, I discovered several people that spell ridiculous incorrectly. Chronically.

It's mostly English teachers on this board, so it amazes me when such a common word is repeatedly misspelled, I have to wonder. I'm not a typo-Nazi like some of the people on the board, but when people are obviously clueless about how to spell something, yet they continue to use the word..

No wonder kids in Korea have such a tough time learning.. Many of the teachers can't spell themselves. An error is one thing (we all make mistakes) chronic grammar and spelling errors are simply "rediculous."

Some people may be clueless about how to use punctuation.

Yeah, but in the end, wouldn't you prefer an English teacher with spelling mistakes than an English teacher who doesn't know the difference between fun and funny, or doesn't know when to use "interesting" vs. "interested", "bored" vs "boring".

In the grand scheme of things (English teaching things), is spelling really that important?

That makes the 'ridiculous' assumption that we're dealing with an either/or proposition. Is it really too much to expect that an English teacher should be able to distinguish between bored and boring and be a competent speller? I mean, just how low do we want to set this bar?

I tend to make at least a few spelling mistakes most every post I make, but I usually proof read and edit them out. I check my questionable spellings at www.dictionary.com ...

I hate it when teachers pronounce short "i" as long "i". Like "keek" instead of "kick".

I agree that it is rediculous, but Korean students don't learn spelling from us. They are actually pretty good at spelling (better than a lot of teachers on here). It's the conjugations that get them. Remember these kids have to memorise insane words like epiglottal or transmigration for TOEIC tests. They don't know how to use them but they can spell them.

Most students' spelling sucks. I find that most of them don't get a grasp on it until midldle school.

Do you know what a long "i" sounds like? "Keek" is the long "e" sound.
