|
|
I want to do some live recording this summer of some coffee-house jams and an outdoor festival. I need something that'll get me through the summer, and beyond (for similar purposes). I'm not a total gear-head looking for the latest and greatest, I just need something that I can get a decent quality recording of what's going on around me. In Stereo. Which I can then upload easily to my computer and listen to on my iPod. (I have a file conversion program that seems pretty complete, so I'm not *too* worried about formats.)
I've toyed with buying an MD in the past, but now I'm wondering about going with DAT or totally digital. I don't really know what's on the market these days, so any help and advice on recording units and mics (and prices) would be appreciated. |

I've recorded pub-style gigs with my sony MD and the results have been decent, but DAT is the way to go, in my mind. |

Do you have a DAT or MD recorder already?
If you have neither then MD would be cheaper to buy. I could sell you one cheap! How about that?
For live recording DAT would be a more professional choice because MD has a 4 times compression level. DAT can record at the full CD quality. However, most people, well, all people, couldn't tell the difference. |

Don't get a DAT. The mechanisms are notoriously unreliable and vary from machine to machine. More or less dead technology.
These days everyone's using hard disc recorders. There are some very cheap ones (I know people with Zoom Handy who don't hate it) and some very expensive ones (I crave the Sound Devices 722).
Alternately, the new HiMDs are very good and seem to have solved the brittleness/compression problem of the old MDs.
I use an AKAI DPS-16 at home and a laptop with presonus mic pres at shows. |

Frak, that's a nice unit. Where did you buy it?
Q: An audio soundcard usb interface, will that override my laptop's built in mic? I am unable at all to disable the soundcard driver for this built in mic. Everytime I record, a channel is dedicated to the built in mic. Will a plug-in usb interface solve that? |

Someone on this site pointed me to a musicians/audio production shopping site in Korea. I can't remember the link right now but I'll try to find it for ya. |

I have a question about your device.
Because this device let's you use an external mic, when you do, does it record with the internal mics at the same time, or can you isolate and just record the input coming through the external mic?
I may want to direct in my guitar without having the two xy mics going as well (and catching all the finger scrapes and desk noise). |
