Hey all,
So, I've recently inhereted a blender. This is nice, cuz I've been wanting to make protien powder smoothies a regular part of my diet lately, but I'm too cheap to throw down 60,000 on the hardware.
Now comes the part when I have to figure out how to make them. I've never make a smoothie before, but I've had a few in uberexpensive trendy places in L.A. Thing is, I don't think I'll be able to find wheatgrass, mangos and papayas, etc. here. I've also googled it, but the ingredients are mostly unheard of around here.
So, hit me up with your Korean style smoothie recipe. Talk to me like I'm an idoit, cuz I've never done this before.
Also, is it beter to make this a breakfast thing (my plan) or maybe an evening pre/post workout deal. I think it probably doesn't matter, but I know really know jack when it comes to this.
Thanks,
Hubba |

My very basic breakfast smoothie: a banana and half a canned peach, ice cubes, a pottle of yoghurt, cinnamon, nutmeg and milk.
Right now I have strawberries in my freezer so I throw in a few of those as well, and leave out the ice.
The amount of ice you put in will determine [obviously] how cold the smoothie will be. I don't like ice cold drinks, so I put in about 3 ice cubes, and then fill with milk up to 300ml mark.
The amount of ice, milk, size of banana will all affect the thickness of the smoothie - try things out and see what you like.

Easiest recipe for fruit shakes:
2 parts fresh chopped fruit (cans suck)
1 part ice
splash of milk, coconut milk, or yogurt
teaspoon of sugar
For protein shakes, use bananas to complement the choco powder. |

Hubba,
I'm a fitness fanatic and smoothies are a BIG part of my diet!
I currently use a blender to make healthy smoothies everyday for breakfast and for post workout meals.
For an easy smoothie use:
-skim or non fat mik (you can also simply use water)
-2 bananas
-carrots
-some small tomatoes
For more variety, try:
-skim or non fat mik (you can also simply use water)
-1 banana
-some carrots
-some lettuce
-cucumbers
For an even more variety, try:
-skim or non fat mik (you can also simply use water)
-1 banana
-some carrots
-some lettuce
-cucumbers
-tomatoes
-leafy vegetables
-brocoli
Forget buying protein packs from GNC or some other ripoff places. There is a lot of protein in fruits and vegetables and most people don't know this!
Don't be afraid to experiment with your smoothies. They may not look tasty mixing up so many kinds of fruits and vegetables, but trust me, they go down very smoothly and are definitely healthy. In addition, you will lose a lot of weight with simply drinking 1 or 2 smoothies everyday.
A final thought...

Costco may or may not be a possibility for you, BUT...
They've got bags of mixed frozen tropical fruit (mango, papaya, pineapple) that are freakin' great blended up with vanilla protein. They've also got frozen blueberries, which are great for antioxidants and are also largely unavailable outside Costco's confines. They have frozen strawberries too, but the fresh ones are in season now and pretty delicious, too, I might add.
Half a cup each of frozen blueberries and strawberries with a scoop of protein and a couple tablespoons of plain yogurt is decent.
I also blended up some pumpkin paste, cinnamon, and vanilla with protein and it tasted like a pumpkin pie... That was decent.
These days I'm also using casein protein, which is pretty thick and goopy. I got the chocolate stuff, and mixing it with a spoon of organic peanut butter is the best way to fill my stomach before sleeping that I could imagine. Well, other than cottage cheese if they were to actually have that here. |

Haddon House and Hannam Market both have lots of frozen fruit, but they can be expensive. I think it is worth it on some of the items. There little store in the basement where Hannam Market is also sells frozen fruit, but it is maybe the same price as Hannam.
http://wiki.galbijim.com/Black_markets has info and directions to these places, and also links to the home pages.
Don't forget that dept. stores like Lotte have a food market, and some items can be less/more/same price as the other places mentioned above. I'm not sure if they have frozen fruit, though. |

Smoothies are the best! They're healthy and if you make them well they taste good. The key to making them is to use frozen fruits so you don't have to add ice which dilutes the taste. I typically use bananas, strawberries, and pineapples since they are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. Whenever Emart or Costco has sale on bananas or strawberries (or any other fruit), I just load them up and freeze them to use in a shake.
Here are some of my favorites.
Regular Strawberry Banana Shake:
- 1 part frozen strawberries
- 1 part frozen bananas
- 1 small cup of yogurt (plain or fruit flavored)
- Splash of orange juice
- Add some milk if you want to make it creamier or just stick with OJ for a more tart shake
Couple of tablespoons of honey
* You can add one or two egg whites if you want to boost the protein content.
Peanut Butter Shake
- Frozen bananas
- Milk
- 1 tablespoon of peanut butter (I use Jif creamy)
* Again you can add egg whites for more protein
Chocolate Strawberry Shake
- 2 part frozen strawberries
- 1 part frozen bananas (optional)
- Chocolate milk (about 100ml)
Green Tea Shake
- Frozen bananas
- plain yogurt
- add some powdered green tea mix
- 1 egg white
- honey
(I've just discovered this so I'm still trying to work out the exact amounts for a good shake
Happy blending! |

For my protein needs and for the added texture of smoothies, I add the soft tofu (found at any supermarket). A dessert spoon does the trick. |
