We all remember the hoo-ha when some young lady gobbled President Clinton. What a storm in a tea-cup. In France, there would have been a public outcry if their President didn't have a mistress. On the telly yesterday came the news that some well known American politicians may have been visiting a brothel.  Not again. Who cares? And then a little later, I read an article that stated: it is illegal to sell vibrators in some states of America. God forbid that woman should be having any fun! How the Taliban would approve.
So why are Americans so sexually repressed? |

When I lived in South Carolina it was illegal to get a tattoo as well...
Kooky Christians having their way...Conservatism means being resistant to change. There are a whole lot of folks who would bring back Puritain law if they could, scarlet letters and all. I suspect any day now we'll start burning witches again.

Ever hear of John Profumo or David Blunkett, ave mia?
How about "Prince Charles?" Did he ever find a way to become Camilla's [insert female hygienic device], by the way? In any case, he seems more than a little repressed to me -- and the British public's fascination with his sex life not a little, frankly, wierd.

Compared to who? Why don't you post about REAL repressed countries, such as those in Latin America, Africa and all of Asia? But of course, the cultures of backwards brown people are always no go zones.
I would agree that America is much more puritanical than I would like. It is ridiculous to ask the government to say, censor what can or cannot be on TV or what someone can or cannot do in their own homes. We can all thank the loud Christian right and the morons over at the Parent's Association (or whatever other annoying meddlers) and the media that subsequently picks up their bellyaching about "morals" and turns it into "news" and "forum discussion." That is the biggest thing, that media actually validates all this BS. I don't think politicians bedroom lives are any of my business, nor do I care; I'd much rather focus on the fact that they take my money by force and then squander it on luncheons and limos.
I do think you're reaching though: I don't think the Taliban would approve of two lesbian women being on talk shows (where they are not getting acid thrown on their faces), countless television shows featuring promiscuity in all ways and positions, internet porn, or Ryan Seacrest. In addition, I don't think that married men in France going around cheating on their wives is something to be applauded. If you really want to talk about sexual repression, let's switch the topic over to the African tradition of boinking virgins to get rid of AIDS or the fact that my TWENTY TWO year old friend in Peru, much like all the other girls there, had never seen a condom. |

No, the question is: why is America so sexually repressed. Why is it that the country that, perhaps in some ways (viewing the crap we watch on the telly), we'd least expect to be so hung up on sex, so bloody hung up about it?

Yes.
Like I said before, it is a very loud obnoxious minority that somehow makes its way onto the news, making it seem like a bigger problem than it is. For example ONE parent's association is responsible for 99% of all decency complaints on TV. It's just the media focusing on easy BS that takes no 1) hard investigative work 2) will interest people (sex sells). They really do just focus on garbage. |

Why are you asking the question when the answer is obvious? You do know the original Americans came from, and why, don't you? And that many of them weren't quite as open as they seemed. Many were rather hypocritical in that their stated reasons for going to the New World were things they later became guilty of. (Gee, what a surprise. Hypocrisy exists!)

Why? As with most everything else because somebody seeks to profit ( i.e. capitalize $$$ ) 
Contrariwise AmeriKa is also quite LOOSE with its sexual morals as well.
Perhaps the ideal would be to thereby strike a balance; both within as well as without  |

Of course, the afore mentioned 'christian puritanism" is one reason the west became rich and strong.
What I'm saying is, you can't hope top thrive as a nation in the future by throwing out all the values and practises that got you there in the first place.
if you assume japan was successful due to a mighty work ethic and national unity, then you have to agree they would become a third world country once again the moment they all decided to put their feet up and not care anymore.. |

| I guess I'm not sure what the op means by "sexually repressed." Her examples are marital infidelity and visiting prostitutes. Doesn't sound too repressed. I guess she means the public "outcry" about these sorts of events. The idea that there are some situations where having sex is morally questionable = sexual repression? |
