Is it normal for an air conditioner compressor (for a standard size one-room apartment) to leak so much water that a large pail has to be emptied after the AC has been on for 6-8 hours? I asked one of the apartment management crew (who seems to understand English pretty well) if the filters could be checked to see whether they need to be cleaned or changed and he acted like that was an unheard of request. He also told me the leaking was normal.

Air conditioners also dehumidify the air so the removal of water is normal. However the water is usually piped outside. Check to see if there is a hose leading out of the house to drain water. It may be clogged or came off altogether and should be replaced. But the air con may have been installed with the typical "it 's good enough" attitude.
