Hi There,

Quite a few reasonably priced places in Taiwan seemed to be booked out in June when I am going for a holiday.

I am arriving at 7pm but I believe it is better to look around for accommodation there so I would only want to book one night to start with I think.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Are they easy to come by normally?

Lonely Planet website says the cheapest are about NT 250 however the internet booked ones are way more.

Cheers,

Michelle

Are you looking at Taipei? If so, I can't imagine anything---hostels included---for 250NTD. A decent hostel is the Key Mall Traveler's Hostel, located across the street from Taipei Main Station (where the airport bus will drop you off). It's something like 550 NTD a night. It's clean, convenient, and one of the managers speaks pretty good English.

I stayed in a hotel for about 1400 per night. It's a "love motel," but it was really clean and decent. It's near Ximen Station (one station over from Taipei Main Station). I'll get directions later, if you're interested.

If you're looking at other cities in Taiwan, you can get a room for between 800 and 1,000, though in some cases you can bargain down to 600.

Unfortunately, a lot of Taiwanese hotels will charge a higher rate for foreigners. Try to book in advance if you can; if not, the hostel above is a good option, and it seems never to be completely booked. I hope others with more experience living and traveling in Taiwan will help out, as I too am interested to learn. (When I asked this question on the Taiwan forums I didn't get much help).

Were staying at happy family hostel which is about 2 mins from the main railway station/MRT.

For a single room for 2 people it is 650TWD, the owner speaks great english. While not the hyatt, it is clean(ish), cheap and close to te subway which is great

hope that helps

Just a heads up: I stayed in a Happy Family hostel in Taipei, and later learned that there are two. The one where I stayed was a complete sh*thole, and wouldn't recommend it (unless things have changed lately). But, I've heard recommendations for the other one. Anyway, I stand by my recommendation of the Key Mall hostel, and can provide more information if you're interested.

edit: Hope everything's going well for you in Taiwan, penfold!
