Here's something I didn't know.
A lot of HDTVs sold are 1080i capable, but did you know that the max resolution they run at is actually 768p (not 720p, but 768p(? That means, 1366x768. To play 1080i content, they have to internally downscale it from 1920x1080 to fit 1366x768.
I didn't know this.
1080i and 1080p are actually both spec'd at 1920x1080 in resolution. |

I thought 1080i and 720p were essential the same thing. |

Trying to compare interlaced to progressive has a lot to do with perception.
Looking at the numbers you would think that 1080i at 60 fields per second
would be equal to 540p at 30 frames per second, and it is in terms of the data sent, but it doesn't look that way. |

I just figured since most HDTV's are either 720p/1080i or 1080i/1080p. I think 1080i and 720p look the same visually. |

NOTE: You should be aware though that lots of TVs which support 1080i have fewer than 1080 lines and so scale the 1080 signal down. That's not a huge issue as even scaled down 1080i is far ahead of a regular NTSC signal.
