Hi everyone...
I'm living in Pyeongchon right now and my contract is up. I'm planning on taking a job in Mokdong but I have no idea what it's like. I've heard through the grapevine that it's run down and ghetto-ish. Can anyone tell me the real story? Is it a good place to spend a year? What are the benefits?
Thanks! |

| A bit far from the city center, but not bad. Much more relaxed than central Seoul. |

| It's definitely not run-down and ghettoish. Mokdong is one of the wealthier parts of the city and very popular for well-off families. |

| At least you'd be close to that horrid immigration office. |

It's a good location. Not far from nightlife, as for the city centre, I guess that depends on your definition of city centre. It's nowhere near Kangnam. However, you have good access to Hongdae/Shinchon and Jongro/CityHall etc.
Pretty nice area of Seoul. |

I'd move to mokdong in a heartbeat. I spent my last year in a neighborhood adjacent to it (deungchondong) and was there frequently for shopping, eating and relaxing. It is home to some beautiful parks, and a wonderful little downtown area, replete with a variety of restaurants and plenty of public spots to enjoy.
I like Mokdong a lot. |

| I live in the Mokdong/Omokgyo area and I am enjoying myself here so far. I have only been here for one month, but it has been a good place to live. I'm not sure what other places are like to live but it is quite a wealthy area and close to some larger districts in Seoul. I like Hongdae and Sinchon of the places I have visited during this month, its not far away from either of them, and its on the same line as Jongno. |

I worked there for 4 1/2 years, and lived there for the first 2 weeks of that.
Good to work, bad to live - it's family land, and nothing's going on. |

| mok-dong is pretty big and when people talk of mok-dong they usually include shin-jeong-dong, mok-dong, omokyo and so on. it depends where you live. it's pretty typical and looks exactly like all the other residential districts in Seoul. it has a big hyundai mall, a costco, an ice rink, a great foreign-owned bar (beer o'clock) and well that's pretty much it...but to telll you the truth that's all you need. it's 7 scooby bucks from hongdae and about the same from schinchon. i would recommend living in mok-dong. |

This is very wrong. Good to live, bad to work. There are many hit hagwons in Mokdong but the area is nice and central. It's very close to places like Hongdae (drink) and Omokgyo (shopping & food).
Maybe nothing is going on but do you want drunk ajosshi taking a leak in front of your door at 3am or the megaphone truck waking you up at 8am? |

I may have been lucky, then, to have worked at a decent hagwon.

No, I don't want that. I also lived in Hapjeong and Seokyo-dong (the part across the street from Hongdae KFC, a coupla blocks down. I didn't experience those things until I moved to the east side of town this year. |
