I'd like something relatively close to the center of things and I need a private room...no dorms. Anyone have any suggestions?
I found this place:
http://www.oakhotel.co.jp/english/
It seems pretty good and very resonable...only about 47,000 won a night.
Many thanks in advance!

I stayed at the Star Hotel right at Shinjuku station right in the middle of the action. It cost about 11,000 yen a night, or about 95,000 won a night. Rooms weren't big, but they were very clean and the staff was great and it came with a great free breakfast in the mornings. It is a very busy hotel though so you will want to book ahead. |

If you're looking on the cheap end of things, The Sakura Hotel is more of a hostel, but they do have private rooms, at about 3-4,000yen a night, and it's quite central (near Jimbocho subway stn, not far from City air terminal).
I spent a couple of weeks there and was pleased with the place. Clean, friendly, central. |

Hmmm...the Sakura looks pretty good, but I see they rent rooms by the hour.
Do "ladies of the evening" frequent that place? |

I use this chain of hotels whenever travelling in Japan, I've always been impressed with the quality of the rooms, prices and english ability of the staff.

Not that I noticed. A lot of Euro-types seem to go through there, and now that I thin of it, a lot of Japanese seem to go through there too at a much quicker rate. The place has a kind of of international hostel/guesthouse feel about it without actually being a hostel or a guesthouse. |

I just got back from Tokyo last weekend and I stayed at the Sakura hotel at Jimbocho station. I was pleased with it as well. It's kind of between a hostel and a hotel it seems. Not a bad place overall. I didn't notice any "ladies of the evening" either haha. |

I agree.
I stayed with one of their hotels in Toyo just under a year ago. It was near Toyo (south east part of the subway system).
They were having a special at the time. 5000 yen a night at the time. That included a full buffet breakfast. I rang the branch personally to book in as the website said they were full, but they were not.
The rooms weren't huge, but for a single guy, I was happy, included a tv and usual amenities. If I complained about anything, I guess the walls could have been thicker, but I wouldn't complain, especially considering how cheap it was.
Recommended for sure. |
