GWANGJU ― A rented tourist bus fell down a cliff near Mount Jiri yesterday, killing five junior high school students and injuring 28 others in Gurye, South Jeolla.
The bus carried 35 people, including the driver, a teacher and 33 first-year students of a junior high school in Suncheon. The bus careened out of control after overtaking another bus, police said.
The bus struck a guard rail on the right side of the road before falling down a 25-meter (82-foot) cliff at 2:13 p.m., police said.
The accident site, 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from Seongsamjae, a rest stop for motorists on the mountain, is at a 70-degree elevation and known as a very dangerous area for driving, according to police.
Among those hurt in the accident, six people, including the driver, identified only by his family name Kim, 41, sustained severe injuries. Another 22 were slightly injured.
Most of the passengers were wearing safety belts at the time of accident, police said.
A total of four buses, including the one that crashed, left the school for a field trip at 8:30 a.m., police said.
The buses were heading to a nearby temple halfway up the mountain after visiting the peak, called Nogodan.

I'm wondering if any of my kids were on that bus...man, I hope not.
I teach a couple of elementary classes in the afternoon, and they were telling me about this story. They were all excited and laughing. I don't think they really thought it was funny though. |

I went to Jirisan on just such a school trip a few years ago and they had a sign up about a fatal crash which had occurred the previous year, urging people to drive carefully. It's really quite a steep and dangerous area. |

Having just driven up and down Mt. Jiri last month, it is a winding and treacherous road with sheer dropoffs. WTF was this ass-hole doing passing another bus? This occurrence and the deaths of school children is a tragedy, but one that was not unavoidable if people would use that slab of meat on their shoulder for something other than hold a hat. |

Five representatives of the families of the deceased, including the father of Kim Gwan-sik, a first-year student at Maesan Middle School in Suncheon, South Jeolla, issued a joint statement Saturday. In it, they urged the school to disclose whether the bus was rented in a legitimate way, how the mountain was selected as the place for the field trip and whether the teacher educated the students about safety guidelines.
The rented tourist bus, carrying a driver, Kim Jong-seon, 41; a female teacher, Seo Yong-jin; and her 33 first-year students on a field trip, fell down a 25-meter (82-foot) cliff at 2:13 p.m., injuring the other 30. The accident site, 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from Seongsamjae, South Jeolla, a rest stop for motorists on the mountain, is at a 70-degree grade and is known as a dangerous area for driving.
Based on statements by witnesses, police said they suspect the cause was a malfunction of the brakes. The National Institute of Scientific Investigation is conducting a further inquiry on the bus.
The bus, one of four rented for the schools one-day field trip, passed the first one at high speed and struck a guard rail heading downhill on the right side of the road before falling down the thickly wooded cliff. The group was headed to a nearby temple halfway up the mountain after visiting the peak, called Nogodan.
I smelled burning tires at that time, said the driver of the leading bus, according to police.
Police said Kim, the driver of the bus that crashed, was severely injured along with five passengers and could not yet be interviewed.
The bereaved families, gathering at the funerals at Suncheon Medical Center, also urged relevant authorities to take measures to prevent such a tragic accident from happening again.

The story going around my school is that the teachers were being blamed for scheduling too many stops on the field trip. The article mentions blame being pointed at "authorities," teachers, safety regulations, etc., but other than not driving insanely fast down the side of a *beep* mountain, what more can you do to "prevent such a tragic accident from happening again"? |

Educating the students? What good would that have done? Why was the mountain selected... because tons of school trips are taken there every year!
It's tragic but it comes down to one reckless driver (as far as we know right now). This hunt for other people to blame reminds me of the baseball pitcher's father in the States who wants to sue the guy whose car was pulled over near the crash site. |

I swear...what's the big rush?
Why was that idiot trying to pass the other buses? Weren't they all going to the same place?
That is so damn sad. When will people finally start thinking with their brains when it comes to driving?...How many more have to die? |

Unless he was a rookie or didn't work in the area, the driver had probably gone up and down Jirisan many times and was well aware of the risks. Perhaps it will come out that circumstances forced him to attempt the dangerous maneuver. |

Give it a rest....it has absolutely nothing to do with the roads, hills, construction. It is the fault of the driver, (unless the bus had a faulty steering gear, tie rod ends, etc.) even then, I'd say it was driver error. Korean taxi and bus drivers are on par with child molesters. They are worthless and blame everyone else for their problems... the drivers reasoning..."well, we have a schedule to keep, we are over worked, etc." Yeah, like the rest of the world also does not have schedules to keep?! |
