This morning I was walking down one floor of my school when it occured to me that all the worst classes at my school are on this particular floor. I work at a combined middle / high school and the vocational high school classes and middle school classes share the same building. On this floor are two grade 1 vocational HS classes that are about the worst I've ever taught. Classroom management isn't a huge issue but if we start doing anything that requires any effort, half of them are immediately tuned out They're the only classes I have that I wish were shorter. Then there are two grade 3 vocational classes that thankfully don't take English anymore. They're generally nice to me but there are a number of real bad apples, including four I found in the local hof the other week. I've heard more swear words coming from them and the grade 1s next door this year than I ever have from all my academic students put together. Then on the other side of the floor are two grade 2 middle school classes with plenty of smart kids but plenty who are constantly disruptive unless I crack down like a drill sergeant. I can make them work and they know who has the upper hand, but so far I've punished more students in those two classes than in all my other ones combined this year.

Anyhow, it occured to me that if it weren't for that floor my school would be about the greatest teaching environment one could find in Korea. I have one academic HS class that's a bit lame and a grade 1 MS class that gives my co-teacher a really hard time but for the most part the other classes are problem and hassel free with me almost never having to waste time with disciplinary problems. Minuse the naughty floor my school is an absolute joy to teach at. Has anyone else ever had a situation like this? I wonder if there's just something in the atmosphere of that floor that makes it so crappy.
