Hi all. I really want to visit Guilin, China when I'm in SK. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about travel times, cost, travel conditions near there, etc. I've searched for it but can't find much info. Thanks. |

HK is your best entry point from ROK. Get a train to Lo Wu, & either fly from Shenzhen to Guilin, or catch a long distance bus. This will halve the cost of flying direct from HK. Also, I wouldn't bother staying in Guilin, but would get off the bus in Yangshuo, or get the local bus from Guilin to Yangshuo. (about an hour & 10-12 yuan). You don't have to stay in West Street in Yangshuo, if you don't want to be around other foreign 'Western' tourists.
Prices in Yangshuo are far cheaper than Guilin (which also tends to get crowded with Chinese domestic tourists.) eg a Li River boat trip cost me 150 yuan in 1999, but was 500 yuan from Guilin.
Reed Flute Cave & Elephant trunk Hill in Guilin can both be visited as daytrips from Yangshuo. |

i've been there twice. spent most of my time in Yangshuo, though, not Guilin. be careful you don't go to China during a 'Golden Week' - that makes travel hell (1st week of May, 1st week of October, & Chun Jie). i was living in Beijing at the time, so i flew -- short stopover in Chengdu on one trip, i think. there's a good cheap ticket site for flights within china-- i think it's www.elong.net
with train travel, travel companies will buy up all the tickets they can and then sell them on for higher prices during peak periods, fyi.
(i have to say that Vietnam's Ha Long Bay is more impressive, though.) |

Actually I was under the impression they forged a chocolate making deal with the Chinese gov't but they were brought low by insurrectos.
Such is life. |
