Teacher Faces 40 Years Behind Bars
For Pop-Up Infested PC
Steve Bass
Wed Feb 7, 3:00 AM ET
Have you ever faced a pop-up that wouldn't go away? You try clicking it closed and another pops up in less than a nanosecond. You reboot the system, annoyed that your anti-spyware program let something slip through.
That's a hassle, sure--but chances are, your experience won't land you in jail.
A Teacher's Worst Nightmare
Julie Amero, a substitute teacher in Norwich, Connecticut, has been convicted of impairing the morals of a child and risking injury to a minor by exposing as many as ten seventh-grade students to porn sites.
It's a short story: On October, 19, 2004, Amero was a substitute teacher for a seventh-grade language class at Kelly Middle School. A few students were crowded around a PC; some were giggling. She investigated and saw the kids looking at a barrage of graphic, hard-core pornographic pop-ups.
The prosecution contended that she had used the computer to visit porn sites.
The defense said that wasn't true and argued that the machine was infested with spyware and malware, and that opening the browser caused the computer to go into an endless loop of pop-ups leading to porn sites.
Amero maintains her innocence. She refused offers of a plea bargain and now faces an astounding
40 years in prison (her sentencing is on March 2).

If the computer was already loaded up with malware, she most certainly is a victim here. Like the article says, I've helped computer novices clean out their computers of viruses, so I understand.
This is symptomatic of a society that views teachers as the bad guys. When you're a teacher, you're guilty until proven innocent. |

Whatever the case ( frankly i suspect she's innocent ), it's all too creepy.
Wasting away for 40 years in jail?
That's not justice. If she REALLY did do what she's accused of ... FIRE HER! |

Don't you know school teachers are evil, or at least that's what many parents seem to believe nowadays. |

Go figure. Freaked up America and it's foul systems of education, law, and politics where it screws working class people over harder than what is reasonable. There is no evidence the teacher did anything wrong. This should had never happened.
1. They should accept the fact the kids were playing around, heck kindergarten make porn related jokes such as pointing and punching at privates area while elementary and middle school probably would type stuff into a computer to see what happens.
2. They should accept that due to the administrations incompetence, the computer was not properly firewalled, to simply correct the problem and go on, but instead pin it on the teacher in such corruption to make up for thier feelings of incompetence. Authority using dramatic power measures when authority is wrong is a sign of dysfunctionalism on account of authority lacking confidence and not willing to admit it and go on.
This dysfunctional culture of how the suits manage in such a threatening dysfunctional manner is why I do not teach or work in America, besides the fact I like to learn how the rest of the world works.
Totally preposterous threat to be a teacher in America, no wonder why few want to teach there, much less, work a job with hostile bosses who use fear to motivate employees and then have some sent to jail over nonsense.
Screw the corruptions of the suits pinning failures on teachers/employees who lack the tools/knowledge to prevent shortcomings like this computer having access to porn sites with kids giggling that they can type something in like "xxx" and look at it when it should had been firewalled. OK, it was not firewalled, administrators should admit the mistake and go on without pressing all these legal charges on the poor substitute teacher. need proof to send someone to jail for 40 years,
oh not in America.
Pretty scary. |

She is getting a new trial.

A New London Superior court judge this morning overturned the conviction of Julie Amero, who was found guilty of exposing Norwich schoolchildren to pornography on a computer, and has granted Amero a new trial.
Judge Hillary Strackbein said the state had conducted further forensic information that the jury had not heard at the trial. The information, according to defense experts, was that the computer had generated pornographic popups and that Amero, a substitute teacher, was not at fault. Amero had been convicted of four counts of risk of injury to a minor and faced up to 40 years in prison.
She has has been the subject of national attention as of result of the conviction, and seemed relieved after Attorney William Dow explained the judge's ruling.
"I have a great team behind me and I feel very comfortable with the rulings," she said before getting into a car with her husband and leaving.
"It was a porn trap," said Chip Neville, a retired computer sciences professor who had petitioned the office of the Chief State's Attorney to review the verdict.
"We're all exposed to this. We wander into the wrong site innocently." |

I taught in the U.S. for 15 years in high schools. My last year there I was accused of "criminal conduct" with a student. I was harassed by administration, the school board and even a few parents to confess and apologize for the damage I had done to this student. I refused because I had done nothing wrong. In fact, it was a blatant lie by the student and backed up, sort of, by the student's friends. Then, the DA got in the act and actually charged me with a crime and, of course, offered me the plea bargain which would have kept me out of jail but would mean I would never have a teacher's license again. I refused this as well and prepared for trial while the school administration and board prepared for hearings to dismiss me (I had tenure). It was the mother of all railroad jobs. I had never been in legal trouble ever and now I was going to go to trial and have a jury decide my fate. As you can imagine, the prosecution lined up witnesses and paraded them up to the stand. My attorney did a wonderful job of cross-examination and literally blew all testimony out of the water. If it wasn't so serious it would've been funny. My two witnesses held up well and the jury took about 45 minutes to find me not guilty. I resigned from the school district the following week...after having been paid all my back salary for 5 months which promptly went to pay my attorney bill. I was broke and my reputation as a professional educator had been damaged beyond belief.
This kind of sh*t happens all. the. time. I'm now overseas and will NEVER return to work in the U.S. again.

From what I've read, the IT guy at the school screwed the teacher over. he testified in court that there was "no malicious software" on the PC. He was proven wrong by a number of people and so now they are going to look at the case again.
The IT guy at the school should go to jail for committing perjury and giving false testimony. He was trying to cover his OWN butt by blaming the porn popups on the teacher, and not his own negligence for not updating the filters at the school. |

It most certainly does.
You've got my sympathy.
My friend's father committed suicide after having been accused of something he was innocent of. He was paralyzed from the waist down. He was an incredible role model to all his students. He'd roll up to his students's desks and, naturally, his legs would sometimes brush up against theirs. He'd also nudge them on their shoulder when he was coming from behind just to let them know he was there (he didn't want to get knocked off his chair if the students suddenly turned around). One girl decided that amounted to sexual assault. |
