... from the outset.

Step 1- Point out that the group that you feel are evil, are indeed evil:

Man, the Japanese are evil.

Step 2- Use some factual, yet unrepresentative information to support your point:

Did you know they have a slot in a door of a hospital where mothers can dump their unwanted babies?

Step 3- Reinforce your original point:

How little the Japanese care about their children. Proof of their evil

Step 4 - Lay the trap for your ideological opponents:

I never see the Japan Fans speak out on this.

Step 5- Place the bait in the trap:

Why do you Japan Fans support baby abandonment?

Should someone be foolish enough to take the bait, there's little you have to do but pick them off from a distance.

For you see, them condemning baby abandonment implies they agree with your stance of the evils of the Japanese. And if they don't do that, then they support baby abandonment. Should they try to play it down the middle- not supporting baby abandonment , but liking the Japanese anyway- you can lay into them for have no moral courage to speak out against baby abandoners in this time of baby-abandoning crisis.

Thus, no matter what happens, victory is yours. It always was.

Did you find this useful? Feel free to use this wherever you can. Everyone loves a winner.

Good point TWG. Always confuse the argument up with an accusation. They have to ply the accusation off first but the arguments not about the accusation so according to debate protocols, defence is out of bounds.

Absolutely. This is the allegation-driven discourse in a nutshell. Also: equate defending against the allegations with "overzealous patriotism" and especially "racism."

Be sure to bring up Hitler and the Nazis in your accusation, and as much as possible, too.

Follow this formula and you are sure to walk away from such an "exchange" feeling good about yourself and emotionally-worked up and especially morally-superior to your opponent.

In other words, mix strawmen with some ad hominem.

Also useful to mix in a little reality, such as someone changing their stance on an issue. Egad! Learning and growing! You have no backbone! Ironically, we salute the open-minded, the willing to admit they are wrong, etc., in our day-to-day lives...

(I admit it can be difficult to tell when the change is honest change vs. BS, but there is virtually no attempt by most to discern a difference.)

You can also invoke the name of George W. Bush. To many on this board he is synonymous with Hitler. Throw in a Rumsfeld or, hell, any other member of W's cabinet and you've got your "Nazis".

We, as a species, have already forgotten the horrors the Nazis bestowed on this world. How can I take someone seriously on this board when they link Hitler/Nazis with Bush/Republicans?

And this is why I mock instead of debate...

Ah, excellent showing here!

http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=88365

I have to say that Jinju gave it his best shot, but forgot to add the final steps until later, which will cost him some points on his way to the partisan gold... Let's turn to Rory Calhoun for the commentary. Rory?

Rory: Well, TWG, we can't fault him for trying to recover from the early fumble. An assist from former political "debate" gold medalists, Gopher and Pligganease helped him get back on track. I think the crowd will get behind him on his next play.

Thanks Rory. Oh, Streetwise Sam has a few things to add. Sam?

SWS: One thing I can not understand, is how the biggest Cafe trolls are also always the ones identifying themselves as politically on the right. Whassupwidat?!

It's a mystery we'll never be able to solve Sam.

Now back to our regular partisan hackery...

Wow, Twg: self-righteous pretentious and implicit claims to moral superiority as you stand back and judge everyone here. "Mocking" indeed! Never seen that before on this board.

Oh yeah, add that to your list of how to always win your political debates (at least to your own satisfaction). Wink

Did you forget to notice that you are mocking, at this moment, and trying to be morally superior while you stand back and judge the OP? If you forgot to notice, I'll gently remind you ...?

This is what you are doing. But you were being ironic and post-modern, right? You KNEW you were doing the very thing you were criticizing, and those of us who are clever could see it and feel more clever because maybe some others won't see it. That makes you cool, and the rest of us feel cool because we noticed how cool you are. That makes you okay. Great for all of us ...

Unless, maybe - you didn't actually REALIZE ... wow, that would be VERY ironic, and VERY cool.

(For us, but not for you.)

My favourite sneaky way to win a debate is to bring up an old book that an expat in Korea could never find and tell the poster to first read up on the subject and then get back to me. Musty old tomes just old enough to be really hard to find but still copyrighted are the best. I can do this because when my name is something like mithridates and I'm arguing with someone with a name like kimchi_warrior_99, it's obvious I'm the more well-read.

Bobster. Bobby-Bob. You sound like Vizzini, mulling over the poisons.

In any case, it is not about irony at all, my friend. The left-wing uses this board to fob pretextual "news-story/argument" after pretextual "news-story/argument" to descredit anyone and everyone opposed to their hysteria, whom they invariably describe as "the right-wing."

And vice versa, of course.

Let us not count the neverending "evolution vs. religion" threads, lest this thread grow to 200+ pages before the night is through.

Meanwhile, those of us with moderate, in-between, views on many of these "issues" sometimes receive fire from either side. I cannot recall who exactly it was, for example, but back during Katrina someone called me "a liberal" for daring to suggest that the fed govt had the primary responsibility to respond to such disasters and coordinate relief. Wink

No matter. It is almost always cool for me; but only sometimes cool for you. I do try to include you in the coolness as much as possible, however. Indeed, last time we talked, I recall offering you a tequila and I think you offered me one right back. How have you been since then?

I'll be happy to help you and Sam out on this one.

The reason you gentlemen are confused is that the biggest Cafe trolls are usually the ones identifying themselves as politically on the left.

See that's the problem, you're looking over there when you should be looking over here

Hope that clarifies things... Cool
