Currently, my fiance and I teach in a private elementary school in China....
the children can be extremely disobedient and disrespectful, but we can still handle them (for the most part!) through little punishments.
[writing lines, standing in the hall, sitting in front of the class facing the blackboard, walking around the classroom over and over, confiscating whatever they're playing with, sudden loud board-banging, or just a stern, angry-faced staredown from their usually nice friendly foreign teacher]
Now, we are currently trying to choose a position in Korea (wow...head spinning) and are doing research...like reading previous posts. It seems that Korean children are quite a bit more advanced in their forms of disrespect then their Chinese counterparts. I've read about the cursing (f@*& you/off, fire-balls, and so on), the anal probes , and other methods of antagonizing the white devils.
Is it really as bad as it is cracked up to be? Are they as evil and terrible and out-of-control as the reports make them out to be?
We both have taught Korean kids in the past, and they definately are different than the Chinese kids....and we've generally really enjoyed teaching them! They have a great sense of humor, their English is usually better.... but the teenagers were much more difficult (rebellious/angry).
I guess I am really looking for some help in preparing myself for the kids...be they the spawn of satan or cute little angelic beings of light.
Any advice/warnings/stories/methods of control for a Korean newbie? |
