|
|
You know, I was in Korea more than a year before I noticed the eyelids were different. This happened only because I was teaching an ajumma class, and they brought it up. I looked at them and wondered what the hell they were talking about. Who cares about eyelids? I guess a little makeup can look sexy, but why does anyone think a little fold makes any difference? I honestly had no idea of the difference, for all my life, until that day the women in that class mentioned it. I wonder how much money is spent on the surgery, a little cut? Jeez, you could probably just put a little strip of tape on it for the same effect.
Why does anyone care? Do we all want to look 'western' or something? And is it only females who care? |

It's pretty obvious Asians have different shaped eyes than us. I always thought the difference was good. Only recently did I find out what this double-fold thing is. To me it's just another wrinkle, no sexier than one of the lines on a forehead. |

It's all about caring about one's appearance. Do you need not keep up with the latest fashion and styles, too? Are you not well-groomed and always presentable? Is not your exterior pleasing to behold thanks to the freshly pressed suit you're wearing?
Oh, I hear you scoffing and saying it's apples and oranges, but always bear this in mind: apples and oranges are from the same family.
The fruit family. |

This is true of women everywhere. Women are always chasing the latest fad. They complain about "being forced" (media, friends, whatever)to do whatever is next, but then they rush to do whatever it is before everyone else. They have only themselves to blame. Just smile and be thankful you're a man.
(Some will probably post here and claim they don't do it. BS) |

I could name like a 100 Korean male stars that have them. Well, I couldn't actually name them, but you see them on TV all the time. |

Umm...Jdog was not saying that Westerners are "white, plain and simple." He meant that there is a simple reason for having the double eyelid surgery---to look white. |

Maybe this is a dumb question, but itsn't it more about having bigger eyes than trying to be white? Even in their artwork, the asian characters have big eyes. I don't think they identify it as a white thing... |

Um...uhhhhhh...I don't think you understand what Asians mean by "bigger eyes."

It's the "looking white" thing coupled with a desire, in a post-industrial and increasingly individualist society, to look "different." It's easy for us to say, " I barely noticed the difference" or "I think it looks cool," but that's because we're looking at it from the perspective of people who have seen it their entire lives.
Most of us come from multi-cultural backgrounds/nations where diversity is almost a given. When you live in a country where 99% of the population is the EXACT SAME racial makeup, I imagine that a desire to look "different" would manifest itself in many ways, one of which is to play down/get rid of some of your "Korean" physical attributes. |

The eyelids thing is something I'll just never understand. Okay, I admit that a lot of Korean girls look very pretty with their western-style eyes, but in his infinite wisdom, if the man upstairs wanted people on this side of Eurasia to have those eyelids, he'd have made them that way, wouldn't he? Presumably these people simply do not want to look Korean and are open in their beliefs as to the superiority of Western features. Can you imagine how Koreans would react if surgically-altered East Asian-style eyes were sweeping the nations of Western Civilization? If Western women wore yellow make-up and got their butts and t1tties reduced in size? No big demand for that - I wonder why!
I don't wanna generalize too much because ex-girlfriends and nice people I know have had it done. It's extremely common. But very unsurprisingly, the most conceted people out there have likely had it done, whilst the nicer, more modest, less self-obsessed Koreans are happy with the features they inherited from Mother Nature.
My ex-girl....jesus. Should've seen her...with her big round eyes, demanding I splash out on accessories for her constantly. I used her for some great sex (for me) and ditched her - I have no feelings for these morons. I said....instead of getting those big, ridiculous eyes, why didn't you get a nice big pair of *beep* and an ass? |
