Hey everybody. I'll be moving to Gumi to teach adults in a couple of weeks. Does anybody here know much about Gumi? Also, where are all the Southern folks? Seems like everyone's from NY or Canada, hahaha.
Thanks. |

| Sure, I'll be working for the Global Foreign Language Institute. The director sounds like a nice lady, and they work with Samsung, LG, etc. who are located there...but that's about all I know. |

Gumi is a very special city. I've never lived in a place quite like it. As you know it makes cellphones, LCD screens, computer bits, and so on. It's not a big city but has a very busy, cosmopolitan, rushed feeling that is stimulating and not harrassing, since it's a small city. It's kind of like a 'boom town'. And the people are spending money because they have good jobs at the plants. The factories have buses which pick up a load of young women, especially, who get a bit more than FT hagwon pay in their second year of 'chip-making'.
The big river, Naktong, rolls through it, and along its banks are big sports fields where it would flood if the water gets high, so nothing's built there. I've seen bigwigs from the plants riding horses there. Guys with their r/c
planes/helicopters.
There are tons of mountains around, including Kumosan which has a cable car (made in Switzerland, 1975) going up half way to a temple and cave. There's a Viking ride and a lot of restaurants at the bottom of the mountain.
The Waegook Cook is a foreigner bar and grill which serves the estimated 100 foreigners that teach in Gumi.
There is a bleach/plastic/ammonia smell to the air, due to all the plants. But it won't kill/maim anybody before the crazy bus and taxi drivers do, hopefully.

| Gumi is the place where they invented GUMI BEARS, they were originally in the shape of litte azumas, and were called GUMI AZUMAS, but oneday somebody noticed that they looked like bears, GUMI changed the name to GUMI BEARS, but there were protests, in the GUMI uprisings, over 200,000 angry azumas marched in protest against the name change. They pulled a bear apart in protest, using their bare hands. The protests finally ended after the president of GUMI Bears offered a truce. He provided an all you can catch and eat pig cook out, complete with all you can drink dong dong ju. The azumas gave in, and to this day, Gumi bears are known world wide. Go to the factory, many of the protesting azumas are still around and can be seen cleaning the trash around the high walls. |

| Well, I'm not too sure, but I think Gumi Worms are giant worms that burrow beneath the ground and burst out to devour newbie ESL teachers. Sort of like Tremors only they smell like kimchi (whatever the hell that's supposed to be). |

Well, its not exactly a story you want to hear before eating, but from what I read, all those azumas, after that all you can eat 'catch the pig' buffet, stuffed themselves, and .....yes........they got worms. Instead of getting down about it, they went to the GUMI president and joked around saying 'hey, we got worms, lets make gumi worms coming out of the buttts of the bears'. Well, the president thought it was a great idea, hence, gumi worms.

| I think Captain Kirks description is fair and accurate. I have not lived in Gumi but stayed there for Public School Orientation. I have also visited for additional training days. It seems to be a nice mid sized city with plenty of amenities without the hassles of a major metropolis. |

I believe, not positive, that I talked to some guy who worked there. I think he quit because the schedule was tiring. Adults usually means split shifts, early morning and evenings. Good luck. It's a good area of the city though, if it is the one I'm thinking of. ("Hwagok Dong" ?) |

Gumi is about 20 mins from Daegu by train.
It is a factory town. There is a lot of $$ to be made there.
OP keep your eyes and ears open and you might be able to make more than most on these forums.
If you want to know anything else...give me a PM. I lived there for 3 years. I mad more money there 7 years ago than I do today. (I make good $ today ) |
