I'll be in Hawaii from 29 Dec. to 6 Jan with my family and I have a few questions for those more familiar with it.

- Is the weather always like on the postcards during this time of year or does it every have rainy spells.
- How much do cigarettes cost? Would it be worth getting a carton at Incheon International before departing?
- What are the best musuems? I want to see Pearl Harbour and a volcano, but beyond that, don't have too many ideas.
- Could you recommend any excursions? I don't like to sit on the beach all day long and am not really fond of water sports (of either variety), but a sea-bound excursion somewhere might be nice.
- I'll be travelling with my parents (mid-60s) and sister and brother-in-law (early 30s), and would be interesting in any recommendations for places that would be well suited to a mixed-age group.

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

What island? I assume Oahu (has Honolulu on it) since you mention Pearl Harbor. My advice: Go to Maui. But Oahu is nice. Hawaii isn't known for it's museums, but there will plenty of cultural attractions and museums.

Get away from Honolulu. Head up to the north shore and get up in the mountains.

You really should buy a guidebook so you don't get screwed by tour companies and their Hawaiian prices. I don't know if there's a copy for Oahu, but there is a series of books that are the best. "Maui Revealed" and "The Big Island Revealed" are in the series, so look for for "Oahu Revealed."

And cigarettes anywhere in the US are more expensive than in Korea, get them before you leave. Or take the holiday as a chance to stop smoking. Laughing

Hawaii's weather is pretty standard year round with 60-70 degree lows and 80-90 degree highs. It may rain, even everyday, but it comes and goes and there's not a "rainy" season.

The Dole plantation is quite nice...good treats, scenery and mostly free.
You can get there on the public transportation buses...the same ones thatgo up to the north shore......
They also have a Chinatown in Honolulu ...for lunch, shopping.
The pearl harbor exhibit (FREE) to the USS Arizona is worth every minute you have to wait in line to see it....very moving experience.

Hawaii is expensive. Damn expensive. But if you're going, then it's best not to miss North Shore -- one of the best beaches on the island. Honolulu is okay - nice beach crowded with tourists and at night the prostitutes come out. Buy your ciggies in Korea. I think they're well over $5 a pack in the US now. Anyway, have a great time. Here are some pics from about a year ago:

I went to Oahu, Maui, Kauia, and Big Island. They are all really interesting.

A lot of people say to bypass Oahu or Honolulu or Waikiki due to 'touristy' factors. But, I seriously love Waikiki and Honolulu. It depends on what kind of person you are, but I've heard it be referred to as Manhattan in the Spacific, and Waikiki is a little bit like that. I love urban activity, and the fact is is right on one of the most gorgeous beaches in the world is simply amazing. In other words, you gotta go to Waikiki!

If you are with your parents and mixed group of ages anyways, you'll end up in Waikiki. So many touristy events and cultural events occur there, it's almost unavoidable. They are also quite interesting and fun. For example, they always have Hawaiian musicians on the beach at night performing, and hula shows, and Polynesian dancers in a little mall complex in the Waikiki area.

There is also a Polynesian Cultural Museum (or something like that, unsure the name). A mixed group like yours, might enjoy that as well.

Whatever you do stay away from people associated with the Dharma Innitiative. They're a dangerous cult who kidnap children. Watch out for Korean American actors who drive drunk. When you're in the hatch always remember to press the button once every hour. Don't wear a Rolex watch there's a phycho Korean running around who thinks you've stolen it from him.

He he he ... in fact, rumour has it that one of the Christmas presants I'll be receiving in Hawaii is the third season.

Thanks, everyone, for the tips and suggestions.
