Can anyone suggest the best area to stay in while visiting in Tokyo for about a week?
Something near public transportation?
If you have specific names of hotels too, that would be great. We are not really looking to stay in hostels...since it is more of a vacation before teaching and since one in the group is pregnant. |

Popular areas of Tokyo would be Shibuya, Ginza, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Akihabara.
I was there in July last year and stayed in a hotel chain called Route Inn. My branch was Toyo cho.

It was on the south east part of the subway. not the most central, but still close enough to see everything in Tokyo easily. I found a week to be plenty for Tokyo alone. Though I did a half day tour also.
I found that the website said that they were booked out, but I had no problems booking over the phone. They were friendly, a few weren't bad with English and while the rooms weren't huge, they were adequate with all you need.
A big issue with staying in Tokyo is $$$$$ This chain of hotels had a special, so I paid 5,000 yen per night, including a full buffet breakfast. Absolutely great value. The only thing that bothered me was that the walls were thinner than I would like. I could hear people in the mornings as they got up, but considering the price, it was a small price to pay.
Google search of hotel route inn Tokyo will give you a few of them, or hotel route in Toyo cho for the one I stayed at. |

Asakusa has a hostel for about 2000Yen a night. The one problem with the neighborhood - it is jampacked full of people/touristy things during the day - is there isn't much to do at night. A handful of bars in a 20 block radius. But there is a shrine and the Asahi brewery during the day.
Where I stayed when I lived there, and I have no shame, was nearby Roppongi. Yes Roppongi is the Itaewon of Tokyo but it's the only thing going all night. Perhaps that doesn't matter to you but it's on the same side of Tokyo and a $30 or so (that's cheap for Tokyo) cab ride to Shinjuku and Shibuya. All three of those places are must-sees. Not to mention that Roppongi has Tokyo Tower and the shrine with the graveyard for aborted/stillborn fetuses.
Hotels in Roppongi start at about 8000Yen a night but check online. |
