Hey all,
I was just browsing through the forums, and reading all about the recruiters and who can/'t be trusted.
Just what is the deal with them.....?
ie.
1. What services do they provide, beyond acting as a liason?
2. How many clients can individual recruiting agencys have? Just what sort of personal service can I reasonably expect?
3. Just how much are the Hagwons paying out to these recruiters anyway? Or am I paying for this?
4. Do employers prefer to save themselves the hassle of finding suitable staff, or would they rather keep the money (if it is they who pay for it)?
With all the anxiety on display in these forums, I'm suddenly curious as to what the specifics of recruiting practices are.
Anyone got a story to share here?
Cheers |

To answer someof your questions.
All they do is act as a go between you and the school. Don't let them tell you taht they are your agent aor anything, because they don't give a sh*t about you beyond your date of hire.
A recruiting agency can be a large company or a guy sitting in a dark hovel. Don't expect much and be weary.
Don't pay any recruiter!! The school should pay them one months salary.
The schools don't have a clue. They hire the recruiters because they think that its some huge task to hire a teacher. Most recruiters then post on a site like Dave's and then collect money. They really don't do anything.
I was lucky and my recruiter is an alright guy and did good. I wouldn't trust most of them though. They're a shifty bunch. They will tell you anything and feed you lies and bs just to get you over here and collect money from the school.
My advice...don't use a recruiter unless you know the guy or have heard good things about them. |

Maybe someone should post a step-by-step guide detailing what a person should do when they decide to go on their own (that is, without a recruiter), filled with tips, hints, advice and places of ill-repute for those lonely nights when - whoa, I'll stop right there. |

I am toying with the idea of myself becoming a recruiter. Seems like easy money they make just for finding people for your clients and you are done and over with from that point on. |

My experience with recruiters has been mixed, some call you, as they all say they will, and are friendly and enthusiastic to find you the kind of job you want, others E-Mail you pro-forma rubbish to fill out- which gets time-consuming, and most don't contact you at all.
If you want to use one, get your details- Resume, diploma (Scanned), passport information page (Scanned) and usually a recent photo- then hit a bunch of 'em and see what happens.
None to date have found anything for me, and I'd say I've contacted about a dozen or so over the past year, mainly due to my not teaching kindergarten and specifying the area in which I wish to teach.
The annoying ones are those that consistently ignore specifications in your application and persist in sending you unsuitable positions...all too common.
Good hunting!

Ohh Trinny-
Don't do it, in theory it sounds easy but it really isn't. A mess of headaches, having to prove yourself honourable in a sea of snakes and do business with them. The teachers and the directors are all pure evil when it comes to contract negotation. Having to deal with directors innane requests and teachers being wishy-washy, committing to you and to 4 other jobs all at the same time. Both lots will sell you down the river and you are not left empty handed but in debt, you have wasted your time, and probably have a phone bill, along with an irrate director wondering where his/her teacher is... Plus it doesn't all finish when the contracts are signed, teachers will call you complaining about why their fridge doesn't work, and so and so on.
Don't do it, unless you have a lot of patience, and are able to dance with the devil.
cheers

Recruiting is usually a short-lived business because of the amount of lying that goes on to get the teachers over there. Then they have to pack up and move on (perhaps change their names).
You can expect to be introduced to a school.
Beyond that, don't expect.
You will be disappointed. |
Yup - Be very wary of recruiters or any middle men trying to get you an English teaching job in Asia.
If you can, apply directly to the school you're intrested in.
Use the www.google.com search engine. |

Hmmm... care to elaborate?
I don't know what Gord's reasons are, but I'm inclined to agree. Recruiters are just one more source of job leads. If you're looking from your home country, they may be your only choice outside of the big chains, which can also suck.
I don't trust recruiters any further than I can throw them, but I'm not above using them. |

Gord protects most recruiters on principle,- why? they're mostly Koreans. Everything Korean is great, and every Korean person is wonderful, so says Gord. |

Doesn't stop there either. Everything about Gord is great too. What a wonderful guy. So wise and full of charisma. He knows everything about Korea. And of course, because Gord likes it then we all have to follow suit. God help those who deviate from that position. |
