This is a popular pasttime with evil hagwon owners, directors, and other admins. Has anyone ever gotten fired, threatened, or warned because of something they posted? Has anyone from your school ratted you out? Or "found out" who you are? Just some thoughts on this, how people dealt with it, and if doing that is somehow a violation of privacy. |

I wouldn't be surprised if it did happen and certainly not parnoia.
I have it on good authority that the larger chains (YBM, Pagoda and Korea Poly Schools) do troll the boards for comments made about their schools.
If anyone wants to PM me, I'd be more then happy to tell how I know this. |

Pagoda has done this many times. Several staff meetings were convened after certain postings here, and we were told to stop posting the ongoings here. Other posters have been PMed by someone in (Kangnam branch) management to stop it. |

That's hilarious! Instead of listening to the complaints, or trying to understand them, it's "stop it or else!" |

Big brother - I knew that it happened but didn't expect the bigger chains to be so blatant about.
What a bunch of dumbasses. Another good reason to avoid YBM or Pagoda - I guess that brings my list to something like 57 reasons or so. |

It's easier to tell people to cease and desist rather than actually coming up with a solution to the problem. This is typical Korean laziness. |

My first job was with YBM in a smaller city, and we were told that if they even " heard about" us doing other work on the side , we would be fired on the spot. We were a couple of newbies and my soon to be pregnant wife was with me, so not a lot was said by us about that. We were also accoused of bad- mouthing the director , ostensibly, the comments were made to an adult student. I was never really sure if I did or not, and it could have been my co-worker.
That was then , and this is now. I would walk right out the door if that was said to me today.
Bad mouthing one's employer is probably not the best thing to do, but stifling free speech is not the answer. At the very least, YBM, and other employers here in Korea should listen to what it's employees have to say. |

Yeah I believe this, especially from YBM. Those who think that some of the hogwons aren't capable of this are in denial. |

I'm certain that Korean English speakers frequent ESL boards. They advertise their open positions, why wouldn't they also read and post in the forums?
Whether they have fired anyone or not I can't say. I suppose they would have to figure out the identity of someone in order to do that.
I've met hogwan owners that have spent several years studying in western countries. Their English is quite good and they know quite a bit about western culture. I'm sure that the thought of creating a western persona on an ESL board has crossed their mind. |

A good reason why one should work under a very solid pseudonym. |

Yeah, at least change that thread title. Giving "the Shocker" in Classrooms sounds... not so good. |

It takes away the whole point of being on the internet, having your identity secret and being able to say what you want. |
