If so, what do you have and would you recommend it? My budget is up to 600K won. Also, where's the best place to get one...Yongsan, Emart, Costco, etc.? Thanks alot!!! |

I have a Canon SI3S. It's not bad...of course if I had the budget, I'd buy a Leica. Sigh. http://www.leica-camera.us/home/ |

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50. It has some amazing features. 12X optical zoom.
A setting changes the quality (image) so pixel density becomes greater in the middle of the photo (your target area). You can then use optical zoom trimming/cropping in playback mode and enlarge/zoom out the center of the photo without graininess. It ends up being 22X, total, or thereabouts.
I actually heard about this camera on Dave's where buffs mentioned it as being the best digital camera short of a digital SLR. The advantage being price. For the SLR's one needs to buy an assortment of expensive lenses and that's WITHOUT image stablilization. This can run you up to several thousand dollars in total.
This Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50 has (35mm equivalent) up to 400mm with image stabilization.
I'm not sure what the new price is for this camera. Top end of what you're thinking (you said you'd go up to 600 dollars). I got it very lightly used for 420. Google it and see if you like it.

Nikon D40 D-SLR. Nice camera for a budget minded photo bug.
D-40 kit includes: body, lens, battery, charger, strap, CDs. <6.1 mega pixel)

Added: 2 gig SD chip, extra battery, tripod, lens cleaning kit.
500k won for the complete package. Got at Yongsan - in the building attached to the old terminal building (blue building).
Walk out the station. Turn right. You should see the railroad yard. If you see e-mart you went the wrong way - turn around.
When you are looking at the railroad yard you can see the big blue building. Take the pedway across (above the rail yard) and enter the blue building. You enter on the 3rd floor.
Go downstairs to the 2nd floor. You will see a pedway leading to the next building. Take that. At the end of the pedway you will see a DVD seller.
Go down down a 1/2 flight of stairs and up 4 steps and through the parkade. Enter the 1st door on your left and the seller is about 1/2 way down on the left side.
You can get a Cannon EOS 400D / Rebel XTi digital SLR (NOT grey market) for about 700k won (body and lens). <10 mega pixel)

Ive got 2: A sony DSC W5 with 5 mega pixels, and a Panasonic Lumix with a 12x zoom, 8 meg pixels, lots of fancy other stuff (like you can set it to "rapid fire" or change the f stop or aperature manually).
I keep the Sony because its small and I can carry it around to take street photos. The Lumix was supposed to be for nature shots and photos that require a powerful zoom, etc.
I actually have to say I like the Sony better for the job it does. The Lumix is really bad for "noise." Meaning, when its dark, picture easily become blurry.
Anywayz, I too will get a full SLR digital camera soon... But not in Korea. I'll wait til I get to some country where things like that are so darned overpriced. If I had to get one here, though, I'd go to Technomart. I got a pretty good deal on the LUMIX there. |

I picked up a Canon Ixus 850IS about a month ago. It's slim portable (fits in your breast pocket) 4x optical zoom - takes nice video (640x480) and outstanding in lowlight condtions. |

I have this same camera, and while it works pretty good, I don't recommend it. It sometimes gets noisy when it shouldn't. I don't even use it anymore and just take my other camera everywhere. |

My Dimage Z5 only cost a couple of hundred and has given me some good shots over the years. But recently, in some low light situations, it seems to be tending to add noise to the image.
If it starts going south, I'll upgrade, but it suits my needs for now. |

noisy as in sound or noisy as in picture quality? I haven't noticed either. |

Noisy as in picture quality. I never noticed it much either until I got my new camera. Now, I can't stand the pictures it takes in anything but perfect light. It does however still work well in good light conditions. |

I too have this camera .
there can be noise at times.. you need to set it as manual and set the ISO to 100 it takes great pics in the day and of course at night you need to set it to nightshot and then you have good shots..
but there is noise if you set it to automatic and use the flash in dark rooms
also has dust bulbs!
but still the IS is great for zoom shots. its all economics the camera companys still dont want to put out the best camera on the market!
so we keep getting cameras that are not perfect. still the CANON does take great shots. but its nothing really that much better than any other dica on the market for the range!
my next camera will probably be the pentax water and shock proof camera. at least that way you can get more out of it. end of the day they all take good pics!
still the IS(image stabilizer ) is bloody awesome!! |
