Most of my life, I have wavered between calling myself atheist and agnostic. Lately, I have had to accept that I am basically an atheist who would like to be an agnostic. My mother is a smug atheist, quite secure in her disbelief. My father was agnostic, and I was grateful for this when he died. At least he wasn't sure that it was going to be the end of him, and I took some comfort in that. Some of my friends are secure in their faith, and I rather envy them. But, faith is something I just don't have. I'd like to believe, but I don't.

for the status-conscious

in search of labels

It's a term I just pulled out my arse a few minutes ago. I've never heard it used before, but it seemed something concise that I could put in the limited space of a title heading. I could hardly ask if they were happy with their faith, when it's something they clearly don't have. The extra word solved my problem. I wasn't going to obsess for more than a few seconds about my thread title. Don't get too excited about it.

If you see it used somewhere else, let me know. Otherwise I will claim credit for its coinage!

At MY funeral I want everyone to get hammered, pop pills, and dance all night to HOUSE MUSIC!

It'd be a better world if we could all be content with our beliefs and stop scouring over everyone elses. There'd be less war, less hate and less of these threads on Dave's.

I'm an atheist who makes fun of religious people a little too much, but remain terrified of the nature of the universe. I wish I could be religious because it's horrible but I just can't fool myself.

I'm an avowed atheist, who is very comfortable with the idea that there is no god in the religious sense.

I'm sure there are "higher powers" at work and humans aren't able to concieve of them, and I'm just grateful to whatever's at work to make the universe, that it allows me to live in this world.

The religious conceptions of god are arbitrary and simplistic. In any case I don't think people should accept mediums in their relationship with life, god whatever. That includes other people's ideas of that.

I am voting as secure in my faith. VERY secure.

Satori, what is your stance here? I read your post asuming you are an atheist, but realized I might be wrong as you have a Buddhist picture in your avatar.
I can't imagine that a Buddhist would be proclaiming the celebration you advocate.
Just curious, nothing more.

I personally break atheism down into two camps:

1) I don't believe in that which I have no evidence for. So I don't believe in god just as I don't believe in Santa.

2) I know in my heart there is no god.

I'm the type 1 atheist.

I think one side of my brain is type 1 and the other side is type 2.

I'm an athiest and am content in my disbelief. I used to admire people who had faith but then realised that I admired those people(i have many relations who are devout catholics) not because they had faith but because they are basically good people.

Really? I've always found atheists and people who don't really care about their religion to be "good" people.

Other
I am not an atheist, nor agnostic, nor a fundamental believer in any religion. I am, however, convinced that there is a spiritual force in this universe and there is some sort of spiritual energy BEFORE a physical life as well as AFTER the physical body is no longer living.

Our very existence is based on energy that must come from somewhere and it doesn't just disappear when we die. From ashes to ashes and dust to dust. We return to where we came from whether in the physical or spiritual sense. Some of us come from better spiritual energy than others. We are NOT all created equal.
