Well, the absolute king of Scottish comedy is Billy Connolly of course. You can't go far wrong with him. |

You know why Scotsmen wear kilts?
Those sheep can hear a zipper a mile away. |

There used to be some pretty funny Scottish comedies in the early nineties such as Rab C.Nesbit and Naked Video.
You could watch Craig Fergusson on AFN after Letterman, but he's rarely funny to me. |

'This guy was going out to meet his friend in the pub, and he went down, he said "Oh hallo, how's it going?" He said, "Fine, fine." "How's the wife" He said, "Oh, she's dead. I murdered her this morning. Dead." He said, "You're kidding me?" He said, "No, I'm not." He said, "I'm not talking to you if you keep talking like that." He said, "Please yourself. I'll show you if you like." He said, "Show me." So they went up to the tenement building through the close (that's the entrance to the tenement) into the back green into the wash house, and, sure enough, there's a big mound of earth. There was a bum sticking out. He says, "Is that her?" He says, "Aye." He says, "What did you leave her bum sticking out for?" He says, "I need somewhere to park my bike." ' |

My Dad was from Scotland (Glasgow) and he was a huge Billy Connolly fan. Many a time he'd drive me to school and he'd be playing his Billy Connolly tape in the car..........hilarious!! The way he used to describe his drunken nights and barfights in Glasgow is legendary. Man, just writing about this makes me want to go out and find a CD or DVD somewhere. |

Or try director Bill Forsythe's movies. The four early ones, set in Scotland, are all great comedies:
That Sinking Feeling - about a group of unemployed youth who plan to rob the local stainless steel sink factory and live off their ill-gotten drains (his pun, not mine).
Gregory's Girl - about a boy replaced as striker on the school football team by a girl he falls in love with and how she sets him up for true romance.
Comfort and Joy - about a DJ who gets involved in a turf war between rival ice cream truck companies.
Local Hero - the masterpiece - about a junior exec in an American oil company send to buy a village in Scotland from its quirky residents as a site for a new refinery.
His later work in the US remained at a high level through Breaking In, but has not been as good since. |

I also like Still Game.
Lovable old codgers Jack and Victor appear in this sitcom about sex, violence and scones. Ready for adventure and always game for a laugh, this pair of Glasgow pensioners prove that growing old is about more than just a free bus pass.
Comedy from BBC Scotland with Chewin' The Fat's old men, Jack and Victor. Starring Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill.

DVD also has (English) subtitles for my wife! |
