I've been told that there is a program in the Korean government that covers the cost of foreigners' tuition to graduate school in Korea. Is this true? Does anyone know what I might be referring to, and if so, do you have more information on the subject? |

I don't know exactly what you are referring to, but it seems possible. The NZ Government has, as of this year, started funding foreign students for the PhD's to the same level as NZ students. This is in an effort to increase the quality and quantity of graduate studies completed here. |

If you mean't me then no. What I am talking about is much bigger than a scholarship, it is a Government policy to set PhD fees the same for International and Domestic students. The level of fees will both be approximately $4,000 per year, which is the same that domestic students normally pay. It is much more attractive for a PhD student than the $27,000 or so they would normally pay to study here. NZ doesn't have a level of endowment funds available for postgrads that other countries might have so fee levels are more relevant.
I guess in Korea you might also struggle to get PhD or Masters scholarships so fee levels are also quite relevant. |

I was referring to the original op as he seemed interested in studying in Korea not NZ. The link i provided is a scholarship set up by the Korean government for international students in masters and phds. It covers most of the fees, a living allowance, flights and free Korean language study as well.
As a side note are you sure about the $4000 a year phd? I am currently doing my masters at Auckland and it is costing me over $5500 a year. You would think a phD is more expensive than a masters |

Blackjack, thanks for the link, but it doesn't seem to be working. Is this program for any foreigner, not just NZers? |

You might be thinking of this one:

www.ied.go.kr -> Study Abroad Information -> Korean Government Scholarship Program -> FAQ
The last I heard it wasn't open to Americans, so if you aren't Uncle Sam's progeny you might be in business. I seriously wished I wasn't when I read about this, it is a pretty sweet deal.
I can't find the exact information on it now but I think it included a tuition waiver, a year of Korean language classes and a monthly living stipend of 800,000 won.
I find it very ironic that Japan and Russia are included on the list below but not the U.S. It can't just be anti-American sentiments could it? Probably just some agreement between the two nation's governments?

There is more than one program.
One is Korea Foundation.
Another one is KJIST Kwangju Institute of Science and Technology. |
